i'd love to trust you... but at this point the anticipation is beyond anyone telling me anything... i must see it... de niro... scorsese... boxing... black and white... masterpiece... just too much for me to turn down... it may fall down the list though... it was at no. 1 before i heard so many bad things.

It tickles me to see people dissing Raging Bull here, since I have always been bored by it. Who would guess that a Scorsese film about boxing would come off so mannered?

I thought Raging Bull was very strange, but it wasn't bad....I think the main flaw with it is the lack of any music throughout the whole movie. Just a couple scenes in the club has some jazz, but other than that the mood felt awkward and similar throughout the movie because it had no music.

I hadn't thought about that. Sometimes lack of music can be great--Picnic at Hanging Rock is an example of silence that really works, creating this eerie suspense.

Wow. While I am a Woody Allen nut, you might want to save Shadows and Fog for the end. It is a major mess of a film.

Beware any movie with Madonna that does not have the word Susan in the title (possibly League; I still have not watched that one completely yet).

I loved it... Even though it didn't really have a definable plot woody allen just holds everything together so well... it's just amazing what he can do... i did find it surprising that i didn't really laugh until 3 quarters of the way through the movie... but that's alright... whcih is surprising too.

I dunno... the Irons "Lolita" is certainly good, but it seemed to miss the essential point that Nabokov's novel was comedy. It was all so damn serious. Only Dominique Swain seemed to realize the absurdity.

If anyone decides to remake Lolita, it should be with an actor who can portray Humbert Humbert's likableness and ability to laugh at himself--maybe Bill Murray. I guess the argument could be made that we already got that with Kevin Spacey's performance in American Beauty, which is a perfectly fine argument as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure why people feel the need to film a novel that is so intensely verbal, unless it's for the sheer challenge of the thing.

I've yet to see anything Peter Greenaway directed (The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover is been on my to-see list), but if he could pull off a movie about a misinterpretation of a rather long poem, that would indeed be interesting.

Naw, you'd need to have text on the screen 'n' stuff to get it right. It'd be like filming a particularly pretentious senior thesis.

Both sentences, of course, perfectly illustrate why Greenaway is the only man alive who would be able to keep it from complete disaster. His version would probably be only a semi-disaster, what with the needless addition of naked women and scatology he'd no doubt bring to the material.

Oh, I see. It is (roughly) about (in case, you don't know it yet) Hitler and his last days in Germany. It was quite probably the most controversial film in Europe of 2004.

Well, now that I've mentioned it, it isn't available. It was restored in the early 1990s to over 5 hours (still short of the original 6+ hour cut) and this is the version I was referring to. It was shown in some U.S. cities at that time and I thought it might have been released on VHS but it hasn't. Short of getting the 5+ hour Italian version DVD without subtitles, I think the 4+ hour version is all that you're likely to find on VHS.

I saw your post on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and how you felt the pop song Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head was out of place in a western. For a truly horrific pop song in a western, check out the Charles Bronson movie Chino.

I didn't make myself as clear as I should have in the earlier post. The chopped-up version I meant for you to avoid if possible is the 4+ hour version. When I referred to the 5+ hour version I meant to say that that's the one to try and see... but as I then explained that probably isn't possible.

"Modern Times" by Chaplin its a great movie, i have seen more than 4 times, its really good.
Now, for the ones i dont recomend, Ghosts of mars i really didnt enjoy it that much and im going to see the remake on "Assault on Precint 13" and then see the original. "Life Aquatic" is really great, after just watching it, i rented "The royal tenenbaums" and made clear that Wes Anderson is a genius!!. Sideways is also a very good movie, and you definitely should see "Closer" from Mike Nichols, its really good!!!

thanks for the recomendations... i am a bit of a rookie when it comes to chaplin, i'm sure you can tell that by my to see list of his... i am a fan of wes anderson... as for ghosts of mars, i've just seen too many john carpenter films that people said were bad and loved them not to see it eventually, but it is of lesser priority.

Suspiria is great and still extremely effective, I've seen it pretty recently. I'm not to familiar with the Horror genre but I have seen all the 'of the Dead' series, so I'm interested in the Argento-Romero flick. I'd like to know how those turn out for you.
