Author Comments:
I've provided links for albums not generally available on places like Amazon. Music of the "classical" tradition, including "new music", are usually listed by work, not album (shorter works are usually not listed). Performers, conductors, or arrangers are unfortuately not listed. Some albums listed by record label in []s when that is more important than the artist(s) of the album. Albums from 2000 and later are here. Suggestions, recommendations and comments are highly welcome.

This is a really good, interesting list! Nice #1 choice.
Thanks. This list will be continually changing. I love Absolution, but I really hope it isn't still at #1 by 2010!
Matt Tobey's list of 500 Best Songs Ever, with commentary on half of 'em. 'Say It Ain't So' is #4. 'Like a Rolling Stone' is #471. So, it's not your usual boring list topped by 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Satisfaction.'
Ooh - thanks for that link, Luke. Interesting read.
Do I need to point out that the 00's started in 2001 ?
No.
Geez, what the heck. I'd heard 5-or-so scattered Bjork tracks and they didn't really grab me, but then I listened to Vespertine and it floored me.
"Almost Heathen" is pretty good, but I'd say go for "Wild Wonderful Purgatory" instead if you've not heard that one. Even if it is only a 1999 album.
Thanks for the tip!
Just for fun: If I had to guess, these would be my favorite albums of all time, as of right now.
1. Metallica - Master of Puppets (1986)
2. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
3. Radiohead - Kid A (2000)
4. Muse - Absolution (2003)
5. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
6. Radiohead - OK Computer (1997)
7. Radiohead - Hail To The Thief (2003)
8. The Beatles - Abbey Road (1969)
9. Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory (1999)
10. The Beatles - Revolver (1966)
11. Metallica - Metallica (1990)
12. Sigur Ros - () (2002)
13. Metallica - Ride the Lightning (1984)
14. Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (1987)
I'm scewed towards recent years for two reasons:
1. I haven't heard much pre-2000 music.
2. I do love the production values and excitement of new music. Sgt. Peppers was surely exciting in the 60s, and still is, but newer experiments like Kid A have leapt even further from pop/rock. BTW, where the hell are the Kid A clones? I don't care if they're not as good or obviously not as original, but I want more! We should be swamped with them by now!
Wait...did Radiohead make a huge jump to #1 or is it me?
Whaddya know? It's been 2 years since I heard Kid A for the first time and it's still growing on me. The Strokes' albums also made a huge jump and Young Liars fell a bit, probably because I've been overplaying it.
It feels good to know that a few people take a glance at this bloated list every now and then. Thanks.
what do you think of the new U2´s album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb?
Are you a new u2 fan? or are you and old follower? Previous Achtung Baby, or even The Joshua Tree?
I liked it, but it didn't blow me away enough to get under the heading 'Simply Wonderful.' I'm not a U2 aficionado, so I couldn't comment on how it compares to the other albums. What did you think?
Have you heard any other albums by Queens of the Stone Age besides Songs for the Deaf? If so, which one is the best for someone looking to try them out?
What's so great about Modest Mouse? I was going to buy Good News for People Who Love Bad News but then I listened to some clips and it seemed too much out there. I like creativity in my music, but I didn't think there'd be enough good tunes to go along with it. Is The Moon & Antarctica any better?
Songs for the Deaf is by far the best Queens of the Stone Age album. I haven't heard their self-titled debut, and only some of R (from 2000). Their newest, Lullabies to Paralyze is good but for me it lacks the hooks and punch of their first three albums. Specifically, I love 'The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret', 'Monsters in the Parasol' and 'In the Fade' from R.
Somehow I'm not sure you'd like Moon & Antarctica if you don't like Good News for People Who Love Bad News, but you need to listen to a few songs in their entirety, not just short clips. Modest Mouse is great because their one of the few rock bands of the last decade to have a distinct, original sound. I can't think of another Modest Mouse song that matches the catchy creativity of 'Float On', as far as accessibility goes, but I can tell you that at first I didn't 'get' it either and now I really dig Good News and Moon & Antarctica, and am trying to track down their earlier work, too.
Sorry, I really rambled. I hope that helped some anyway. I invite you to ask more questions or offer suggestions if you have any!
Well, I do think that if "Float On" is too happy and poppy for you, you might enjoy Moon and Antarctica, which is darker. But clips from Good News should probably be pretty representative of their sound. And if you don't like music that's "out there", you probably won't like Modest Mouse, as they are pretty bizarre.
My tastes are too fickle for three different levels of rank, and I removed the graphics.
I merged my "favorite albums..." lists into just two lists (ran into that Listology character limit again), this one for music from before 2000, and this one for music from the year 2000 and beyond. My tastes are everchanging, so I've removed all notion of "favorite" albums and instead opted to simply list all the ones I have. Roughly 500 of these aren't quite complete because I used to collect tracks, not albums. I have lots more music from artists I haven't come close to collecting in full albums, along with scattered internet-only tracks.
