i'm aware that this list is *totally* subjective, because i know plenty of people who dig thom yorke--but this is all in good fun, so don't freak out people!
anyway, i'm curious to hear who y'all would add...

Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, The Stones, Patti Smith, and most of The Who.
oh you are soooo right on. thanks!
Glad you said only "most of the Who" cause I thought Keith was a cutie!
The Ramones!
Great suggestion! Luckily, they had that hair to hide behind...
REM aren't exactly a bunch of pretty boys either.
Shalom, y'all!

What about Aerosmith..Buck Cherry...
hahaha--i'm not sure *how* they got there!?
taryn, you don't agree with my Ramones comment?
oh totally--i'm not defending their looks in the least! i was just saying i'm not sure *talent* was their high point either. ;) perhaps they managed to break into stardom using other weapons--like pogo dancing and insane lyrical repetition?
The Ramones are American music icons. They rule!!
well what I'm saying is...Buck Cherry has enough talent to make the list and The Ramones don't?
doh! i didn't realize i forgot to *add* them. i must have been so amused by the thought that it slipped my mind. sorry 'bout that.
Yeah, The Ramones are homely..
Most heavy metal bands were comprised of some ugly dudes . . . Lemmy from Motorhead, all the guys in Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Ozzy . . .
Of course, I can see the talent question is going to be brought up . . .
yeah if we started in that genre the list would be waaaaaay too long. but it does bring up an interesting point--what does it take to get famous? any hypotheses?
my take on "famousity"? a little luck, loads of good timing and at least one song with a hook...once you have the one hit behind you - especially if it's a summer hit - you're famous.
case in point, and list appropriate, dexy's midnight runners. they were more than a little funny looking, their song "Come On, Eileen" is not that good, but they endure...damn 80's collections.
and fyi - dexy's midnight runners have a greatest hit album - it's a double disc cd. why?
