- uh... lets see...
- Ambient, #1 for sure
- Funk, gotta have that funk
- Metal, mostly of the power/symphonic subgenres
- House, according to most of Ishkur's guide
- Trance, as of recently
- Jazz, it's cool daddy-o
- Exotica, makes me feel like I'm in 50's extremely white Brazil, not really sure why I like it but hey *shrugs*
- Stuff I can only describe as being made by Terry S. Taylor, it's pretty ridiculous (in a good way, of course =P)
- Beck, no idea how to really genre-ify him so I'll just stick with "Beck"
- Classical music, when the mood strikes, especially Holst's "The Planets" but lots of others
- They Might Be Giants, I'm not a huge fan of a lot of alternative rock but they're on the list
- Reggae, gotta love them offbeats
- Pretty much the 70's as a whole is good stuff (albeit often cheesy, but good in moderation)

Any particular favourite ambient albums?
Hmm... good question. Well, my all-time favorite and first (which is probably related) album is Anamoog, which is really a compilation. I'm seeding it on Soulseek if you use it. Also I like Brian Eno's Another Green World. Its not really entirely ambient, but it has a lot of great songs that are in or close to ambient, or at least work with my ambient-listening mood. I also really dig some Jean Michel Jarre, his Oxygene probably being his best known but his Chronologie and Equinoxe are pretty good too. (P.S. check out his song Teo and Tea for a more trancey(?) great song) Also, check out General Fuzz's self-titled album, downloadable free of charge from his website. I especially like his track A Piece Inside. Probably my favorite space ambient album would be Ticket to Mars: Contemporary Electronic Soundscapes Vol 1, also downloadable free of charge... legally. Also the space ambient collection "Expo 2000" is pretty good, with a wide variety of artists. There are tons of others, but those are the ones that come to mind. I can't find it right now but Steve Roach's (not Reich) On This Planet strikes my memory as good, but its been a while since I listened to it. I'll try to come up with more if I remember any other notable ones.
Thankyou for your concise reply! I will try to get hold of the ones you've mentioned but as of yet I do not have. My personal favourites are Aglaia - 3 Organic Experiences, Biosphere - Substrata & Shenzou, Autechre - Amber, Music For Airports, Irrlicht & The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld.
Yeah, no problem. I actually have all of those except for Amber, although I think I have their Tri Repetae. Also, you might like Eluvium's Copia. From what I recall (its been a couple weeks) its a very orchestral, soothing kind of ambient. Plus, how can you not like a song called "Indoor Swimming at the Space Station". Oh, and a fun factoid. Twice now I've found a Brian Eno song in a modern movie, which I of course immediately bring up and get shushed by the rest of the theater. In 28 Days Later, when they are driving around in the countryside, they play Eno's An Ending (Ascent), I think off of his album Apollo. Then, in Daft Punk's Electroma, they play In Dark Trees while driving through town. Sorry for the tangent, its just so damn satisfying finding ambient in pop culture =D.
Ahh yes, gratification always comes from hearing a rare song on a mainstream tv programme or movie, the other day I saw Amon Tobin's Easy Muffin & The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds on a driving programme called Top Gear! I'll have to look out for that in 28 Days Later, I've always thought it had quite a good sountrack too.
Amber is definitely worth a listen, pure bliss to hear, great music. As for Tri Repetae, that's just finished downloading so I'll post my thoughts on it later, in the meantime I'll definitely check out Eluvium - Copia, thanks! (:
