Do you have subscriptions to DVD-rental-by-mail programs by Blockbuster, Greencine, Netflix, and Nicheflix?
Right now, it's just Greencine, Netflix and Nicheflix. I'm thinking of quitting Greencine. I use Blockbuster for the occasional store rental. I've joined the MVP program at Hollywood Video. Video Review is my local independent store.
Interesting - Greencine was the one I was most looking forward to joining once I've moved (still a long ways off) due to its selection. Is Nicheflix better? Why are you considering quitting Greencine?
Greencine's selection is much larger than Nicheflix's, but Nicheflix has titles that aren't available in the U.S. on DVD.
I plan to quit Greencine, because Netflix has 99% of the titles I want to see. I can always rejoin later, if I need to.
I would not recommend Greencine or Nicheflix to replace Netflix, but only as a supplement.
How did you like The Lady Eve?
It's touted by Peter Bogdanovich as "the greatest romantic comedy of all time", but I missed it. I liked it, but maybe I've seen so many imitators that it didn't have the freshness it should have had for me. The dialog was quite witty, but I like My Man Godfrey, His Girl Friday, and Bringing Up Baby better. The main thing the Lady Eve has going for it is the hot sexual chemistry between Stanwyck and Fonda. Henry Fonda is a gorgeous sap in this film, and Stany has him wrapped around her finger. I'm not a fan of Stany's; she's too brassy most of the time, but she's softer in this one. I found the plot unbelievable. It didn't make sense to me emotionally. The only way it worked, I suppose, was sexually, and you know, I'm not a fan of movies that use sex as a substitute for emotional truth.
You really should review everything you see. You do it so well! Excellent insights, thanks!
You're too kind. I have a hard time believing that my reviews are helpful to anyone, but you are very encouraging.
Well, for the most part it seems like we review-writing Listologists aren't really in the business of writing "helpful" reviews. They are more personal reactions to film rather than the typical plot summary and analysis that you get from professional critics. Guess who's reviews I read more? :-) Anyway, every time you've been solicited to say a few words on a movie, I've always been taken with the result.
Thank you for providing the venue for us to practice reacting to films :).
What does "OTHER" involve? DVDS? Videos? watching it at school or something.
Also what was Mean Girls like?
It's a video I watched at a friends' house. I didn't rent it myself.
Mean Girls...hmmm...it's a pretty good teen comedy that grown-ups can appreciate, too. Lindsay Lohan plays a girl who learns how to be true to herself.
The Machinist opens here Friday. Since my family is celebrating Christmas this weekend, it will take some effort to catch it.
So.... as always, I am hoping to hear your reaction! Should I make that effort? Is it good?
Shalom, y'all!

I'm not a good one to ask. I'm afraid I don't think too highly of it. It has a plodding pace.
They talk about it being "dark" and "edgy", but I think that's just because of the visual style. Alot of it takes place in a machine shop, which is a metallic, greasy place. The outdoor scenes have a washed-out, colorless look (deliberately). The way Christian Bale looks in the movie is startling.
However, I found the psychological mystery completely unsurprising. It has a lot in common with Johnny Depp's Secret Window, if that helps. There are a couple of red herrings that are never explained (plot holes?).
However, according to IMDB, guys between 0 and 18 love it. How old are you?
I am 31, so I miss that category by a bit!
Your review actually nails my fear about the film. The trailer looks good, but I kept thinking, "Is this going to be another one of those goofy, dark, twist films, all atmosphere and no logic or depth?"
I think I might catch it if it is convenient, but I will not go out of my way. I am much more determined to watch Kinsey, also opening here tomorrow.
Thanks!
Shalom, y'all!

I should admit that it does have depth. You have to work at. It has several layers of meaning. Even though I guessed early on what the overall mystery was, I was wrong about the specifics until they were revealed. I didn't feel any surprise, though, which I'm sure wasn't their intention. I'm not injecting any spoilers here, because I'm afraid to tempt you :).
I am utterly spoiler-proof. I never peek if there is a smidgeon of a chance I might watch the film. When I watched television, I would even turn the show off before the previews for next week because they always told me too much, and I LOVE surprises.
(This might well be a side-effect of being one of those freaks who will not read the answer to a puzzle until hours after I should simply surrender.)
The Machinist certainly sounds like it is stacking up to be a 'catch it if I can without pain' film. We'll see. I have no idea how hectic my weekend will end up being, but I do believe a storm is brewing (and, to be honest, I am a big Grinch this year, so I am already girding my loins for the holdiay blitz)!
Thanks!
Shalom, y'all!

What do you think of Sideways?
It's a film I'm really interested in, but the Luxembourg-release is fixed for mid-february 2005!
I do not share in the enthusiasm for this movie, perhaps because I'm a female. I think men love it, because it reflects their internal lives. I'd say it's a good movie, but not great.
OK, I see your point.
I'll let you know how I found the film as soon as I have seen it.
Please do.
What did you think of The Third Man and The Seven Samurai?
I think The Third Man is an excellent film noir suspense thriller/love story. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew that Harry Lime was the third man. I don't know how I knew that, but it didn't spoil my fun at all. I've studiously avoided reading anything about the film, but somehow, it leaked in.
I think Seven Samurai is brilliant. Definitely one of the greatest films of all time. I loved, loved, loved it. I should put it on my list of favorites. I've decided I am a huge Samurai movie fan.
:-) Your post makes me happy. I have The Twilight Samurai from Netflix right now, and I can't wait!
You're in for a treat, for sure.
