Author Comments:

I suck.

I highly recommend Jean de Flourette and the sequel, Manon des sources . They must be watched in that order. Manon des sources stands on its own but seeing it through the frame of Jean de Flourette makes it that much better. I have trouble sitting still for "grown up movies" but a friend of mine chose Jean de Flourette as their half of our 2-for-1 Rental Night. If I ever do manage to sit still then I fall asleep.

Gérard Depardieu has never been one of my favourite actors... I'm not sure that he even knows any of my favourite actors. Come to think of it, I doubt that he has even heard of their names. Depardieu plays a hunchback. Let me just point out that Duck Soup has no hunchbacks. Jean de Flourette is two hours long. Let me point out that Duck Soup clocks in at 68 minutes. (And Disney claims that The Hunchback of Notre Dame is 93 minutes long while it feels longer than a game of Risk.)

We pulled out the futon and put off making poporn until the intermission just before Duck Soup . Confidence was not high. The troops' morale was low. And then... The movie was wonderful. The popcorn went unmade. Duck Soup went unwatched. And then... The futon remained out.

Manon des sources was a mutual choice for our next 2-for-1 Rental Night and it was also wonderful (and only slightly less so.) I can't think of a better movie sequel that wasn't just the same characters just doing the same thing. Well, there is Aliens but on closer analysis the similarities between the two sequels are superficial at best. At the very least I hope that there is no Manon v. Predator in our future.

I'd say more but I'm off to conquer Yakutsk.

I read Ebert's enthusiastic reviews of both films sometime ago, and i think i once caught part of Manon in Cinemax Latin, but i like to watch movies from the begining.
