Movies I've discovered since my last sojourn here...

  • BLUE VELVET - Yes, I FINALLY saw "Blue Velvet", and now I can at least kind of appreciate what all the hype is about David Lynch. Okay, I can more than appreciate it, I understand it. But that still doesn't mean I'll like "Lost Highway"!
  • EASY RIDER - WOW. Now THIS is a film worthy of being considered a classic. It catches a time that I can't really understand, and gives me a sense of it. It felt like a breath of fresh air. It made me understand motorcycles. The scene where Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda discuss freedom is probably one of my favorite scenes ever.
  • THE DOORS - I just watched this last night, probably under ideal conditions. I was alone, it was after midnight, and I was feeling a bit depressed. This movie sucked me in and did not let me go. I was expecting a sort of mediocre biopic. Foolish, foolish me. What I got instead was a wash of the color, sights, sounds, feelings, of the 60's and of the Legend of Jim Morrison, if not, perhaps, Morrison himself. I am not a huge Doors fan, but after watching the movie, I wanted to run out and buy his albums, Meg Ryan is the only sore spot in this movie. She has replaced Gwyneth Paltrow (who I now don't mind) as my female movie ruiner. Oh, yeah... Oliver Stone is still an asshole though. I don't care if he did make "JFK".
  • DO THE RIGHT THING - I watched the Criterion DVD of this film, and I was very impressed. I was also very saddened. Racism seems so inevitable in this society (white on black and black on white) and this movie did nothing to dispel that feeling. I think it was an important film to watch, however. I liked the multiplicity of views expressed by the characters, and how you could really understand everyone's side of the story. Samuel L. Jackson, as the radio deejay, however, represents my viewpoint, we need to love one another.

These are some movies I consider key to understanding cinema that I hadn't watched as of my last posts on Listology.

There are others that remain to be seen (Raging Bull, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now - I know, I know) but these are some that I took on and found to be good.
