I'm afraid of being disappointed pretty much every time I get excited to see a movie. If you go into Team America with your only expectation being laughter, you'll be alright. After watching the IFC bits on Saw in between the Italian horror flicks last weekend, I'm certain I'd be disappointed.

Yeah, I probably won't make it to either Birth or Saw with The Incredibles and Sideways opening here this week. I'm still undecided about Team America, despite my love for South Park and even Cannibal! The Musical.

I agree with Reviewer Steve (er, wait, is it "Cosgrove" here?) in that "Team America" is NOT Pro-Bush ... but that doesn't redeem it much. It's funny, don't get me wrong, but I think Ebert nailed the movie when he referred to it as "nihilistic." Nihilism is great if you're a J.D. Salinger short story, but shaky territory in other people's hands (Breillat, Denis, Solondz). Even "Bigger, Longer and Uncut" said a lot more about society.

I agree that it's nihilistic... but that's about all I agree with Ebert about. Personally, I thought that the nihilism gave it the edge that frankly was missing from most of the jokes (yeah, it's funny, but it's also the most uneven thing Trey and Matt have ever done), and by the film's end the satire had grown so poisonous that I wasn't sure if I should be amused or disconcerted. I'd like to think that was intentional.
