Author Comments:

the first of these are listed due to childhood trauma (does The Wall count as a movie?), some for violence (ie: the ear scene in R.D.), and some just because i didn't feel it worthwhile to suffer with the characters. i'm not saying these are necessarily "bad" films--some of them had their great moments--but overall, i could've done without them.

hey tar...how could you not like shawshank? what's not to like? i mean there's the sodomy scene (and if that's the reason, DON'T see american history x) but it's completely necessary. --ame

it's not that i didn't *like* shawshank; parts of it were extremely well done. but yeah, there were some scenes i just didn't want/need to take with me, although they may be necessary. (also, see my list entitled "Films I'm Avoiding For One Reason Or Another" to find American History X and others of that sort...) call me Squeamish, but i like sleep too much. =]

i would put pulp fiction on my list of movies i wish i had not seen....
add to that the recently released swordfish

Yeah, I saw The Wall at a Halloween party when I was like 8 years old, and I'm still not over it.

Not one of these is a movie I've seen. I avoid movies that would cause nightmares or major sleep disturbances!

Man Bites Dog is a seriously gruesome film, but isn't it too worthy /not/ to see? I mean, it really takes you by the balls (or female genitalia if you're differently gendered) when you realise that you (and the rest of the audience) have been strung along by this guy, laughing at his casual violence, up to the point when it goes too far. The parallel with the film crew is there, but you don't see it unitl it's too late.

Would you suggest renting Man Bites Dog, if you love scary films?

honestly i think i've blocked it out. that's how off-putting i found it. you're on your own with that one!

i took a someone out to see the movie naked for a first date. i didn't know anything about the film. needless to say that was our last date together.

i don't understand why that film got so much good press.

oh man...i'm sooooo sorry about the date thing--that's pretty rough. as for the good press, the *only* redeeming thing i can think of is the conversation the main character has with the security guard.

(Exc. from imdb.com--Johnny: And what is it what goes on in this postmodern gas chamber? Brian: Nothing. It's empty. Johnny: So what is it you guard, then? Brian: Space. Johnny: You're guarding space? That's stupid, isn't it? Because someone could break in there and steal all the f***in' space and you wouldn't know it's gone, would you? Brian: Good point.)

especially the bit about the barcodes and the end of the world... but to this day, david thewlis gives me a severe case of the heeby-jeebies.

i'm curious about the krays....even though i take it you didn't like it. i want to hear more about it even though you didn't enjoy it. can you tell me more about it? thanks

well, it has been quite a while since i saw it--we rented it because of that morrissey song about them ("last of the famous international playboys")--but i guess it wasn't much worse than any other gangster/mob movie. they just had *unique* ways of killing and torturing people, like with swords instead of guns...

it does bring into question the nature vs. nurture theory--because (if i recall properly) the filmmaker implies that the influence of WWII and their mother may have been possible causes of their evil natures--but i don't really buy it. nothing about this flick compelled me, but that's just my take. let me know if you watch it and have a different view...

Most of these I agree with, and would put on my movies I'll never see list, but I can't figure out why you'd have Dangerous Minds on this list. I don't remember it as being terribly violent, and the story line isn't new (Lean on Me, To Sir with Love, etc.) Rachel liked it (she's not into violence, but is into teaching); I thought it was okay, but it was no Air Force One or Die Hard for action/violence/etc.

you see, this list isn't *all* about violence... it also includes movies i feel were a serious waste of time--and this movie definitely qualifies there. i just remember that it left me feeling void and empty. not to mention that i find michelle pfeiffer nearly intolerable...

and i can handle a stereotypical storyline if it's done well, but despite the fact that this was based on a true story, the filmmakers managed to squeeze every bit of realism out of the film. let's just say it struck me and several others as completely unbelievable and uninspiring.

After reading a lot of your previous remarks, I understand that most of the titles are due to either its violence or its mean-spiritedness. I'm assuming that you considered both "The Story of Us" and "She's All That" PUTRID since they are movies about relationships. If this is correct, I agree 100% on "She's AllThat", and I will continue to avoid "Story of Us."

well, normally i wouldn't qualify a relationship movie as "putrid" but these two were especially disheartening.

She's All That was just an awful high school flick with no depth of character or meaning whatsoever--not to mention that i despise the premise that the artsy girl is homely (because she--*gasp*--wears glasses!), clumsy, overly emotional, and defensive.

My problem with the Story of Us is more a kind of resentment. It left me feeling as if I had been through a senseless war--beaten and unrewarded. plus, michelle pfeiffer drives me insane no matter what; i should've known better. one reviewer at imdb says: "Great movies happen when images replace words. "The Story Of Us" was verbal diarrhea."

man bites dog sucked hard, i agree with you on that it was supposed to be all deep and reality check like but it was so boring. i have to disagee on resevoir dogs, shawshank, boogie nights (didnt like the end section though (you know what i mean)) pink floyd the wall made me cry for two weeks

Having just seen the movie myself, I have to ask: how on earth did you get suckered into watching Man Bites Dog?

good question, jim... i was living with a girl who was dating a film major at the time and he thought it was brilliant so we rented it. needless to say, it didn't take long for me to quit listening to him!

what was it you dont like about Shawshank and Reservoir dogs?

see the very first comment on this list for my shawshank response... for reservoir dogs, well, im just not into watching people be tortured--call me crazy. ;)

hehe
