Some of these movies I expected to enjoy (Shakespeare in Love), but I ended up liking them far more than I expected. Some of them (Hoop Dreams) I did not expect to like at all and ended up just loving.

i'm totally with you on some of these, especially The Professional, 12 Monkeys, A Midnight Clear, The Negotiator...
(then there are those that, for me, were hurt by the hype, like Shakespeare in Love & Austin Powers. decent movies, but my expectations were too high.)
a list like this for me would also include Out of Sight, Drop Dead Gorgeous, & Breakfast at Tiffany's.
I understand your point about the hype. I have been spared a lot of that by not watching any TV (no movie previews or cast interviews) and working from home (no one stops by my office to kill time by talking about how much they *loooved* Shakespeare in Love).
Definately Out of Sight and Breakfast at Tiffany's. I'll have to check out Drop Dead Gorgeous. Thx.
