A day-to-day journal of my consumption. Yes, I know this ain't exactly healthy. But nothing I do is healthy. So there.

I'd planned to do a whole elaborate review log, but then I realized that I don't have the capacity for it. I can't tell you if something tastes like plums or figs or barley or dog water or whatever -- I can only tell you if I think it's any good. So that's what we're doing here. Items will be described, raved about, slammed, spit upon, etc. only once. Repeat engagements will only involve listing. [UPDATE, 10/13/05: Okay, so there's no describing involved anymore. I kinda ran out of ways to describe this stuff. So here's the new hotness: Now the really, really good stuff is in green and the really, really bad stuff is in red. Everything in between is plain. And the stuff with the lines through it represents items that were corked, oxidized, too old or otherwise undrinkable for reasons other than quality. Yay for me.] Quantities will not be discussed, as I see it as kind of pointless.

Do you like rum? have you ever tried Cacique?

Funny you ask about that -- rum is the only spirit I don't drink under any circumstances. The flavor just doesn't appeal to me, and I don't do mixed drinks (except for gin & tonic... now that's delish).

You sound like a good candidate for the Rum-Haters club. Lovers of rum can also join, but they must not drink any rum at meetings.

LOL. My kind of people.

One of the best lists I've seen on here. Geez, you're quite a drinker. My log would be a lot simpler as all I drink is Guinness, Beamish, Anchor Steam, Anchor Liberty Ale, Speakeasy Prohibition Ale and Shiner Bock.

Damn you and your ability to get Shiner Bock! I was introduced to it during my last trip to Oregon, and now it irks me that it doesn't show up this far east. That and New Belgium -- yeah, everybody loves Fat Tire, but the one I really want out here is their 1332 Black Ale. Ooooh, that's tasty stuff.

And honestly, I'm probably as surprised as you are that Guinness hasn't shown up here yet.

It's a Texas beer, so I used to drink it a lot during my time there. The only other beer from those parts is Lone Star, which is drinkable but only marginally so. I remember happy hours in Houston where you could get Shiner longnecks for 50 cents. Those were the days.

We've only been able to get it here in CA for the last few years. Transplanted Texans raised a ruckus and demanded it.

Yeah, I'm familiar with Lone Star. It's very much an 'eh' beer.

I guess it's all a trade-off. I may not be able to grab Shiner or New Belgium (or even many of the great brewery-only Rogue beers -- I still fantasize about their incredible Chamomile Ale), but I do have ready availability to Yuengling, Ommegang and Dogfish Head. So I should just shut up and count my blessings, eh? :-)

I hereby declare you the Manny Farber of Alcohol Appreciation. Live long and guzzle.

Also, having come back from a brief stop in Brussels this past holiday, may I suggest "La morte subite?" You know about "Chimay Triple," I'm sure....

I'm always open for beer recommendations. I can't quite put my finger on it, but "La morte subite" sounds vaguely familiar. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Wow, a daunting list. I haven't tried most of the drinks you've listed here, as the UK obviously has different affordable drinks here.

I'm glad to see you like the Tokaji - I enjoyed the one glass I tried in Budapest, but haven't opened the bottle I took home yet. Forgot I even had it, actually. I think I may crack that sucker this weekend.

As for your opinion about Greek wines, I can't say I entirely disagree. However, I had some decent whites from the co-operative winery in Kefalonia. I know one of the ones I had was their Bio-Robola, though I don't remember if that was my favourite of the three. It's been awhile.

And I share your fondness for the Belgian ales. I'm not a massive lager fan (I prefer German dunkels and have developed a taste for English bitters), but the Belgian beers are almost enough to convert me.

I don't know if this is something people do over in the US (it's not something I've heard of in Canada - I'm Canadian but currently living in Manchester), but people occasionally add Tia Maria to their Guinness here. It's a lovely dessert, creamy and not sickly sweet, but one whole pint of it is a bit much. Give me my good old-fashioned Guinness any day of the week, and none of that extra cold stuff.

I've had several Greek wines I've liked (the Nemeas are generally reliable), but the general perception is Retsina. Yecch.

And I haven't heard of the Guinness-Tia combo. I just may have to try that out...

I've only tried the Kefalonian wines, as that's the place I visited. And you're right: retsina is vile. I heard once that the Greeks were constantly raided by the Turks who would take all their good products away. So the Greeks decided to resinate their wine and develop a taste for it - the Turks hated it (quite rightly), and left it alone. I don't know if it's true, but it amuses me nonetheless.

Yes, it is that time of year. I had my first Bombay Sapphire and (slimline) tonic of the year just a few days ago. People here usually drink it with Gordon's Dry, but Bombay Sapphire makes all the difference.

I give the peoples of England credit: Gordon's is at least better than the crummy well spirits we Americans get if we don't call our liquor. (You've never tasted hell until you've tried a gin and tonic made with frickin' Barton's Gin.) But Sapphire definitely makes all the diff. I only wish there were bars in my area that carried Tanqueray Ten...

You know, it never occurred to me to notice what they serve in Canadian bars. As I always requested Bombay Sapphire, I just ever thought to look. In England, though, I have to be more careful with the pennies. Never tried it with Tanqueray Ten, but if I ever see it, I'll definitely give it a go.

Sheridan's! I just bought myself a bottle of that in the Caribbean after a 'taste testing' that also had me trying various Cruzan rums (in general, meh, the coconut's okay) - I love the dual-compartment set-up of the bottle. I'm still trying to figure out why it's not available in the U.S., though (I got it for an insanely cheap price, too, like $9 - I would have bought and mailed ya a bottle if I knew you liked it).

I also had the displeasure of tasting this butter pecan rum or something like that from South Africa. It was like drinking cooked margerine. Don't remember the name, don't want to.

As far as I know, Sheridan's is unavailable in America because it was a huge flop about ten or fifteen years ago here. The reason for the brand's unfortunate failure was twofold:

A) The bottle wasn't quite as convenient as it currently is. According to my boss, the old package was a damn pain in the ass, and the stuff never quite poured right.

B) The American distributor tried to position it as the heir to the throne of Bailey's. Now, if you ask anyone who's been involved in the liquor business for a while, the only successor to Bailey's is... Bailey's. Any liqueur that tries to be "the next Bailey's" is as doomed for failure as any musical artist who gets stuck with the "next Dylan" label.

Fortunately, I'm not as low as I thought I was -- I discovered a second, unopened bottle resting comfortably on my liquor shelf. So thankfully, I can keep the hysteria in check for now. :-)

As for rum... I think 'meh' pretty much describes the entire spirit category. Don't know why it's never impressed me, but it hasn't.

So when are you gonna drink some Merlot?

A friend with only Coors Light is no friend at all. ;-)

Also, am I insane for preferring Bombay Sapphire to Tanqueray (NOT the "Ten" label)?

You're not insane at all -- Bombay Sapphire is a superior gin. Given the choice, I will pick Sapphire nine times out of ten. (The tenth time, I will either be too drunk to tell or be short on cash.)

My dad loves Tanqueray, i'll recommend him this one.

Been toning down the drinking a bit, eh? Shame you didn't get to try the Anchor Bock a few months ago. I think they only sold it here in the Bay Area. It was only around from May-June here. I found one behind some other beers in a corner store last night and scooped it up. Good stuff.

Who makes the Bare Knuckle Stout and how was it?

If I've been toning down, it's only because all my friends are boring now so I rarely go out anymore, and it's no fun drinking to excess at home.

The Bare Knuckle is a Budweiser product -- it's their attempt to out-Guinness Guinness. It's not bad, but it's so much like Guinness that it seems redundant. Only reason I drank it was because I was at the Rennaisance Faire and Guinness wasn't an option (heresy!).

One good thing about being in Seattle: I finally got to sample the elusive Alaskan Smoked Porter. Holy crap, what a beer!

Really? I've been not too impressed with smoked beers I've encountered in the past, but your seal of approval changes things. I wish I knew where to get that stuff around here... :-P

For the KGB coffee, how much of the liquors fill up the cup? Like, is it just a splash of all three or is it half coffee and three full shots?

I was in Atlantic City drinking my gin martini the other day and was staring at a bottle of Pravda and wondering where that came from. Is it just me, or are there a ridiculous number of new vodkas showing up everywhere? I've tried the Ciroc and the Belvedere, but then there's these new flavors and there's this one called "Pravda" and it just seems to be getting out of hand.

(On a slow night, Stella's my trusty old stand-by.)

I honestly don't know about the coffee -- I ordered it in a restaurant. Your latter proposal sounds like a fun idea, though. (I'm of the school that a drink recipe consists of whatever ratios work for you. Like my idea for a great margarita: two parts tequila to zero parts lime juice and zero parts triple sec.)

And dude, regarding the vodka: You have... NO... idea. As much as you've seen around? That's half the vodkas on the market at best. Pravda's actually been on the market here for two years. (It's pretty good, BTW.) There has to be a saturation point in the market, but I'll be goddamned if I know where it is. It's like Baskin freakin' Robbins on my back wall these days.
