- 1. John Hiatt “Crossing Muddy Waters” I love this CD. Hiatt is one of those musicians I try to pick up everything he does. His song “ Have a little faith in me” was the song I danced my first dance at my wedding. I think Muddy Waters is one of his best in some time. A nice mixture of Blues, Folk and country tinged stuff. I really like the title song and “Before I go”. But strong disc all around
- 2. Johnny Cash “American 3: Solitary Man”. Amazing record for a man who has been on his deathbed more than once recently. I recommend this whole series actually. Something to be said for Cash singing a good Neil Diamond song. Plus a real nice version of U2’s “one”. Highlight for me though is his version of Will Oldham’s “I see a Darkness”.
- 3. XTC “Apple Venus Volume 1” Real nice to hear one of my old favorites again. This is very listenable pop disc. No real bad songs. Catchy music, witty lyrics.
- 4. Moby “Play’. The jury is still out on this one from me. A lot of people whose musical taste I really appreciate love this album. Some of this stuff is truly great but some of it just doesn’t move me at all .I am going to give it a few more listens to see if it grows on me.
- 5. Afghan Whigs “1965”. A soul Album? I was pleasantly shocked by this one. I had bought a couple of their earlier stuff and was indifferent. This one sounds great.
- 6. Steve Earle “Transcendental Blues” .My latest purchase. After one listen, I can say I want to listen again. Probably a good indicator. This guy usually does strong stuff. Interesting journey for this guy Started out as the Country Springsteen, serious addiction problems and now just a fine musician and songwriter.
- 7. Belle and Sebastian “fold your hands child, you walk like a peasant” Not as good as “Tigermilk” but it still demands attention and still some of the best lyrics of the past 10 years.
- 8. Bob Dylan and the Band “Basement Tapes”. One of my attempts to update my Vinyl collection. I don’t think I never noticed the innocence on this Disc before. I really like Dylan, I think, “Blood on the tracks” is one of my favorite Discs but I love the Band. These guys just had fun making this Disc. The greatest album ever made that no one was supposed to hear.
- 9. Everclear “Songs from an American Movie Volume 2” Not as good as Volume 1 but I still love to drive and listen to these guys stuff. Turn it up; pop music like I grew up with in the late 70’s. I can hear they are Petty fans.
- 10. Charlie Parker “Cole Porter Songbook” Not a Jazz Aficionado but I love a lot of it and try to add to my collection as much as possible.. Bird is one of my favorites and I always love Cole Porter so this one was a natural and it doesn’t disappoint.

. I currently own over 1600 albums (either on Vinyl, Tape or CD). Much to my wife’s dismay (Jim where are we going to put all this music? cant we get rid of some of this stuff?) I have been adding music lately. So here are the last 10 CD’s I have bought and a quick review.

Glad to see you enjoyed the XTC and Afghan Whigs discs. 1965 in particular is a sadly over-looked alubm. They're both two of my favorite albums of the 90s (and they both ended up on my top 100 rock album list).
A fellow critic recently pointed out the John Hiatt release to me. I had no idea he had released a new album. I'll have to pick it up soon.
Great list.
Shalom, y'all!

Actually I think I picked up the Afghan Whigs off one of your lists. Different stuff for them and I thought it was great. I highly recommend the Hiatt CD and the Steve Earle one is very good also.
Jim
Then I'm very glad you enjoyed it!
I've heard the Earle CD, and yes, it is a very good one. What a career that man has had. The first disc I heard from him was Guitar Town. Miles and miles separate his earliest and his latest albums. A vital, vigorous artist.

Hey, jgandcag, shoot me an email at some point - lbangs@hotmail.com. I have a question I want to ask you off-board.

I really need to stop my hectic schedule long enough to listent to Apple Venus. (Luckily, I recently finished a huge project and hope to have some more down time in the next few months.) I've heard a few tracks, but I haven't had the chance to listen to the album all the way through yet. Anywhere near as good as Skylarking?
How would you compare the new Cash to his first "American" album. Not including comps, that one is my favorite from the dude in sable.
Either you're almost as behind as I am, or you need to update this list!
Zeep! Zeep! Zeep!
First off, yes i do need to update and yes I am always behind in things.
Apple, Venus is very good. I still like Skylarking more but I would reccomend you put the time into listening to AV.
I just listened to all 3 of these back to back to back on a road trip to Maine, so I can say 3 compares very favorably to the original. Great choices of songs on both albums and Johnny is Johnny. 2 I found a little subpar as his material isn't as great.
I have four extremely large stacks with CDs I've yet to tear into. Apple Venus (both volumes, actually) is hiding in one of them. I'll have to excavate and spin it soon.
I'm not sure if the latest Cash is in there or not. I'll have to do a run of rumaging.
