At this point, a purely academic exercise.

parents like you are the reason i often wish there were laws about naming kids.

That's just plain inappropriate. Live and let live.

my opinion is if you can't tell how it's pronounced by how it's spelled than you either choose terrible names or you're a terrible speller, both of which plague about 2/3 of all parents from calculations... i'm sorry i just don't believe that children's names is an appropriate place for creativity, it's tacky and dimwitted... but live and let live, that's why there aren't and shouldn't be laws against it, but that doesn't mean you need to deny the stupidity of it all and that i can't think it's stupid... to this day i can not look my nephew khiyle(kyle as far as pronunciation is concerned) in the face without laughing... and that goes double for my cousin sharell... if i were either of them or my name was iodine, i would legally change my middle name to "my parents were idiots"... but live and let live... just know i'll be laughing my ass off at your poor little kids for it as i do whenever i get the chance(not to their face of course).

I'm looking over the list, and I think the only one that's difficult to pronounce is Alohilani. A large part of these names is that they all shorten down to normal nicknames. For instance, Anemone can go by Mona or Nelly or Anne. It's interesting to me that these names all have a dual capability, expansion and contraction. And frankly, reactions like yours are the reason I'd advise my kids to go by their nicknames.

"that doesn't mean you need to deny the stupidity of it all" -- one person's stupid is another person's creative. How many Michaels does one planet need?

fair enough... and good point on the michael thing.

If you're anything like me (us), you'll change your mind a hundred times before making a final decision, and you might just have to take others opinions into account (husband/partner/wife etc). &nbsp Ours are Matthew Stephen (m) - from the bible, and Kayleigh Michelle (f) - from the songs by Marillion and the Beatles, now 18 and 16.

I love to hear people's stories behind the names they choose. I wonder how many other parents chose Kayleigh for the same reason and, if not, what the other inspirations are.

Your reply to the above also reminded me of our thought process for the shortening of these names: Matthew would probably be shortened to Matt, and Kayleigh to Kay or Leigh, all good options.

See, I think this is a fabulous list... It reflects your relish of language, and the flexibility of the names is awesome.

"Hi, my name is Ann."

....And then, later, if the person proves themselves worthy, "Nope, not Anabelle. Anemone."

Or, oooh! My little quasi-namesake "Gen."

HEEP! :D

'Cept I totally hope she'd go by Emo. I remain incorrigible.

And I'm completely on board with Emo.

Hell, one of my dearest loves in life is a girl who went by Emo, once upon a time....
