Suggestions and criticisms highly welcome.

Hmm. I'm not sure if this one is really what you're going for with this list, but I've never met anyone who didn't like REM's "Nightswimming", and I think even people who are generally apathetic or negative towards REM and / or Automatic for the People tend to like it.
Anyone out there who wants to either support this claim or prove me wrong, feel free.
i will support your claim.
i'm generally apathetic towards rem, and i like nightswimming.
It's a good suggestion. What I'm looking for on this list, though, is stuff that's more 'catchy' and sticks in your head - which isn't quite how I feel about Nighswimming. Nightswimming is 'pretty,' but it isn't really riddled with 'hooks.'
Count me as a half-human as Cheap Trick- I Want You To Want Me makes my skin crawl.
Nightswimming is a great song.
T'ho
:?)
That's ditto for me. I despise that song.
I hate it too, but maybe because I've heard it a million, zillion times?
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm informing the Men in Black about all of you.
Surrender is a far better song.
I agree. How do people feel about Surrender?
Seven Nation Army? Really? I mean, I think that song is great, but I really don't think it belongs here. I have some friends who just can't stomach the White Stripes' minimalism. I don't think it's on this level of ubiquitious love.
P.S. Which movement of Moonlight Sonata?
Ummmm.... good question. The popular one :-) The simple one, you know with the... you know. Or maybe not.
Yay...Glenn miller.
The simple one? You're probably talking about this one, which is the first movement. I like that song, but I personally prefer the more bold, exciting third movement. Both are pretty famous. For some reason, much fewer people have heard of the second movement. I'm not sure why.
Oh, right. Yeah, I was talking about the first movement, though I also like the second and especially third movement.
I HATE "Where is the Love"...but I am the dark lord, so maybe that explains it.
Alright, I know that this may be too recent, but honestly, what song in recent memory has had the huge mass appeal of "Hey Ya"?
I know that it eventually got played out (to borrow a term from my friends), but, initially, everyone I know LOVED the song.
It still will go down as the most popular single of the 00's so far, and I expect it to place very highly on end of the decade lists.
Afterthought:
Even if there are "haters", "Hey Ya" definitely fits the list in that it had gigantic crossover appeal. Every type of music listener loved it, without betraying the hip-hop community.
That is a great suggestion.
I know people who will grow purple cursing at rap and hip hop music who loved that song. That says something.
And AAA's right; so far, it is the most popular single of the decade.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
That is a good suggestion. I'm generally not a fan of rap or hip-hop, and I was kinda apathetic towards Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, but I do like "Hey Ya."
I'll have to have a listen to that one again.
I wonder if perhaps a few Listologists dislike songs like 'Where is the Love' or 'I Want You To Want Me' because they have such incredible mainstream appeal?
But then, that would probably mean there are people out there that hate Hey Ya for the same reason...
Oh no, I like "I Want You to Want Me", but I never liked "Where is the Love". I just hate that song.
I'm with AAA on this one. "Where is the Love" is just plain irritating. Average verses with a painfully grating chorus does not a great song make. I think "Hey Ya," on the other hand, is a great song that's been played out beyond repair.
And well, Cheap Trick...not my favorite, but likable enough.
Fine. Just... fine :-)
It's funny that you include Hey Jude on this list... why that one and not, for example, Norwegian Wood... or Yesterday? In fact, I have yet to meet anybody ever who dislikes the Beatles...
Yeah, it was a pretty arbitrary. I just didn't want The Beatles to take up every space on the list :-)
Suggestion!!
My Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison
Probably a good suggestion. Can anyone offer confirmation? It's one of the few Van Morrison songs I like.
Hmm. It's really hard to make lists like this that apply to all people. For example, "Brown Eyed Girl" really hooked me when I first downloaded it, and I really loved it for quite awhile. But as I began to listen to more and more Van Morrison, I began to recognize the brilliance in his other songs, and this huge smash hit seemed a bit less appealing. I mean, I still like the song a lot, but I could imagine some hardcore Van Morrison fans who hate that song for its sheer single-friendliness, if you know what I mean. It's just a song that was born to be overplayed. And that problem could extend to other songs - the songs with ubiquitous appeal could be liked by many people but not the big fans of the artist. The artist's big fans might prefer songs that are more inaccessible to casual fans.
I dunno. You won't hear any objections from me on "Brown-Eyed Girl", but keep in mind that it might invite dissension.
I always think of that when I think of Metallica. Their most popular track is Enter Sandman, but for hardcore Metallica fans, Enter Sandman would probably be down between 10-20th best song.
Isn't that exactly why the songs are on this list though... because they appeal to everybody and not just people who already like the band, in fact maybe to people who otherwise cannot stand the band?
yes, hopefully that's true of every song on the list.
Imagine By John Lennon
Billie Jean By M.Jackson
Bohemian Rhapsody By Queen
Under The Bridge By Red Hot Chilli Peppers
TearDrop By Massive Attack
good choices! Right now I have to go to work, but let me consider those.
