Author Comments:

Hermann Hesse was once a favourite author of mine, but I've not read anything of his for a few years now, mostly because I don't see many titles in the shops other than those above rather than me losing interest. I could be tempted to re-read one or two, if it weren't for the fact that my unread shelf is already brimming with titles.

The years shown are the approximate dates that I read the book.

After my rather bad experience with Hesse, I decided to give him a second chance. I just began reading Steppenwolf, which I like till now (first 60 pages).

See above for my recommendations (in approximate order): Gertrude / Rosshalde / The Prodigy / Narziss and Goldmund / Peter Camezind. I found Steppenwolf a rather difficult read (but good luck).

looks like I wasn't even born when you last read them ;-)

I understand he was a kind of counter-culture Icon during the 60s.

The spiritual side of Hesse's works, like Siddhartha and Journey to the East, were very popular at the same time that the Beatles were into Transcendental Meditation and Eastern philosophy.
