Greatest: The List of the 100 best films ever!
- changed...
- patience
1. There's a similar list on Listology.com: 'Critics' & Popular Choice: 10 Best Films' by lukeprog, even though the principle is another one.
2. Below is enough space for comments and discussions.
3. N.B.: I had absolutly NO influence on this list.
4. To make this list, I used several other lists of 100 greatest movies by: AFI, L.A. Daily News, Tv Guide, IMDb, Empire Magazine, Mr. Showbiz, Rolling Stone, Film Four, Village Voice, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out, theyshootpictures.com, movie-revies.colossus.net, ...
5. Out of their choices I composed this list that is entirely based on a fair, objective and neutral points system.
6. If you knew other lists of the 100 greatest films of all time, do tell me. (NOT in chron. or alphab. order)
7. How many have you seen?
8. All in all this list has got 496 ranks. So, if you're missing your favourite film (or any other film), just ask and I'll tell you where this film ranked.

Did you assign points based on how many times each title appeared on a list?
No, that's actually lukeprog's system. I gave points for the ranks these films got on the various lists.
Rank 1 --> 100 points
Rank 2 --> 99 points
...
Rank 100 --> 1 point
That's a good system. I oughta try that sometime.
Nice, look at that list! Fantastic!
Fight club, not appeal to you?
Actually Fight Club is one of those movies I didn't like the first time, but that I really want to see once more.
I was quite disappointed, because I could find nothing very exceptional in the film. Well, probably at a second watch...
sadly i can't say i agree, but i do see where you're comming from. its annoying when a movie sint as good as you thought it would be. i had that with "Panic In Needle Park" big let down. i am suprised though going back through, that Pulp Fiction got 0. you must really hate that one! lol and thats usually such a fan favourite (i Know i like it)
In fact I had exactly the same problem with Pulp Fiction as I had with Fight Club, with the only difference that the disappointment was here much more intense. After all I had heard about it, I expected a masterpiece, but unfortunately it didn't get me at all.
Generally I give most movies a second chance. Here it'd already be the third one, and I really dunno if that can change anything.
Nevertheless I must admit that I have already made rather positive experiences with second (or third) watches. Most recent examples include Some Like It Hot and GoodFellas. Other films I really need to see again are for instance The Godfather and Dr. Strangelove.
This is originally what I intended my own list to be, but I was too lazy. Cheers! (Do I sound like a whitey saying a'ight?) I'm sure Rushmore is as pleased with the high ranking of Raging Bull as I am with The Return of the Jedi.
#7 is indeed a high (but well-deserved) ranking for Scorsese's masterpiece (sorry, Rushmore). One film that disturbs me is Pulp Fiction on #22. Ah well, I probably need to see it once more.
Seen them all. A pity World Cinema is poorly represented cos the selections have an (Anglo-)American/ Hollywood bias. How about: MovieMail top 100 (2000), Time Out (1995), Romanian critics' top 100 (1995), Time Out readers (1998), Time Out readers (2004), "Editorial Jaguar" (Spain) 100 films of the Century (2000), Sight and Sound top 100 (2002). There was also the poll of top 100 European films by the Cinemateca Portuguesa in 1995. Other polls in Germany, Russia and France (eg "Positif") i don't have a full 100 on, just the overall top 10-25.
I've now done a list here of the MovieMail 100- more to follow in due course. Oh, and you might like to ask "Senses of Cinema" (excellent website) for their full current top 100, not just top 10 overall, in their ongoing poll
I'm very, very grateful for your excellent tips.
MovieMail: OK, I'll take your list here on listology. Thx.
Time Out: Yup, I've already taken this list into account.
Sight and Sound: ditto
Editiorial jaguar: I couldn't find this list. Could you please indicate me a link?
Ditto for Romanian critics and Cinemateca Portuguesa.
Generally I need lists with 100 films (not 10, 25, 50, etc.).
For "Senses of Cinema": The website is really great. As their poll is still ongoing, I'll wait a little bit, and add them later.
P.S.: Respect, respect. Seen all of these? Excellent!
ur list passes my high levels.....just about, mind you.
well done. finally someone with some knowledge on film. now let me ask you a questions me and my film scholoars are currently debating. which film has better black and white cinematography and why; woody allens 'MANHATTEN' or scorsese's 'RAGING BULL'???? judging by your list i am looking forward to your p.o.v.
Now I'm very sad to disappoint you in that point.
Hmmm...apparently sth. went wrong here, but what? This is NOT the list of my 100 favourite films, but I've only composed these rankings out of several (around 20) lists presenting the 100 best films of all time.
Not just that, but I haven't even seen Manhattan. Therefore I can't answer your question.
I'd suggest to ask someone else here, lukeprog, kenji or AJ, who (I'm sure about that), have seen both films.
BTW, this list is subject to change, as meantime I have already taken another list into account.
