a couple suggestions, ones, at least, that my list would have to include:

Calvera (Eli Wallach) - The Magnificent Seven
Principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) - Ferris Bueller's Day Off

but I can't really argue with anything on your list. nice!

What about:
Dr. No (From James Bond)
or even DR. Evil the funniest villian

This is a wonderful list. Were it mine I might shuffle the order a bit, but I'd have a hard time knocking anybody off. I'd probably put Hugo Weaving/Agent Smith in the contention from The Matrix. Maybe one of the scumbags from Robocop. That's all I can think of at the moment. But I'm tired. I'll sleep on this and perhaps post more tomorrow.

Excellent list. I'm envious (speak of the devil and his horns appear).

Thinking about villains has made me realise how many Gary Oldman has played - he has almost specialised in such roles: Mason Verger in HANNIBAL, Dr Smith in LOST IN SPACE, Egor Korshunov in AIR FORCE ONE, Zorg in THE FIFTH ELEMENT. Hell, he's even played Pontius Pilate in JESUS (a German movie). Not to mention Dracula.

Even without Oldman, a list of memorable movie villains could be much much longer than this one. But, again, this is an excellent top twenty. My only complaint is that it ignores most of cinema history. I'm seriously tempted to attempt the longer and historically inclusive list.

R.I.P. Jonathan Harris, the original Dr Smith, who died the other day.

amen, friend.

Many of the actors in this list have played numerous villains, Gary Oldman as you said, John Malkovich (Dangerous liasons, Con Air), Jack Nicholson (The Shining, A few Good Men), Dennis Hopper (Speed, Waterworld), Alan Rickman as the Sherrif of Nottingham in Robin Hood. It was hard to choose the best villain to represent them. I also wanted someone to represent Christopher Walken, any Suggestions?

I noticed Clint Eastwood has his work cut out for him, facing off against 3 on my list.

Anyway i am glad you like my list so much, i look forward to reading your 'Top Villains' list, if you choose to make one.

Well, he was the smooth-talking Bobby Cahn in Wayne's World 2, and he was Reed Thimple in The Country Bears, perhaps the most evil movie ever made.

Christopher Walken has had so many good villains rolls! His best (I think) are Vincenzo Coccotti in True Romance (1993), The Hessian Horseman in Sleepy Hollow (1999), Frank White in King of New York (1990), The Man With The Plan in Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995), Brad Sr. in At Close Range (1986) and Gabriel in The Prophecy (1995)

I, personally, would have to include some animated villians, and maybe some women. But as for suggestions, here ya go:
John Huston in Chinatown
The Shark in Jaws
Sergi Lopez in With a Friend Like Harry
Wow, I can only think of three, but I'll come up with some more later.

i think a lot of us need to clone our own lists. this is fun...
