I would recommend any of these, but especially De Profundus, a long meditation Wilde wrote while in prison during the last years of his life. Compared to his witty comedies, the seriousness and insight of De Profundus is shocking and moving. Very rarely has someone looked back on their life with such regret.

Cool list. While waiting for the page to load I was wondering if you'd listed the Boethius and the Wilde. Impressive.

Im not sure I consider it great Literature but it certainly has had a very lasting effect on the world; how about Marquis De Sade's "LES JOURNÉES DE SODOME". I remeber loving Boethius when I was in my early twenties. I might need to go look at it again

Thanks for the compliments bertie and jgandcag. I've never actually read anything by Mr. de Sade, and I try to limit these lists to what I have read. De Sade certainly has had an impact, and interestingly enough, it seems his works have a radically different tone from most of the works I've listed.
