Where to begin . . . A quite recent craze (folks lined up at midnight of the release date to buy the fourth book, which I think came out last summer). Marketed as children's books (young adult division), but I have yet to meet an adult that wasn't also hooked. My wife gave me the first one for my birthday last year. I wasn't particularly enthusiastic because of the hype and because I don't read much fantasy anymore. She read it first (she doesn't generally read fantasy at all) and loved it. Based on that I gave it a try and loved it too. It's pretty widely read here at Listology. You can read a pile of reviews of the first book over at Amazon. A sentiment I've heard and agree with is that the Harry Potter books are a welcome breath of fresh air in a genre too-long dominated by The Chronicles of Narnia (which I enjoyed as a kid, but haven't read in years).
I don't know much about the author, J.K. Rowling, but she sounds pretty cool. I know she recently wrote two add-on books, the proceeds from which will go to charity. Haven't read them myself.
In short, I recommend you give them a try. It doesn't get much better in the light escapist division.
Harry Potter, perhaps?
I'm not familiar with that. Why don't you enlighten a home boy Jim!
