This isn't about music that shows up in movies, but cases where major characters (or parts of them, in some cases) burst into song, for better or for worse. I was tempted to add the Babysitting Blues number from Adventures in Babysitting, but I just couldn't reconcile it with the word "great".
P.S., a (?) after a song means I'm not sure of the exact title -- feel free to help out if you know them.

How about the scene in WAYNE'S WORLD where they're in the car and mime to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". Utterly hilarious.
Another good one! And of course, we've all done that (knowing full well how ridiculous it looks to the guy in the next car... 8^)
I like the "Say a Little Prayer" sequence in "My Best Friend's Wedding" as well as the Bobby Darin sequences in "Beetlegeuse".
I haven't seen My Best Friend's Wedding -- though I understand it's supposed to be good. But how could I forget the Dey-oh song from Beetlejuice? I'm not familiar with Bobby Darin, though... Can you enlighten me?
Just as a note, that's Harry Belafonte's "Banana Boat Song" in Beetlejuice. I also like his other song at the end of the film called "Jump in the Line".
How about "Puttin on the Ritz" in Young Frankenstein. It's hysterical (although I'm not sure it's a non-musical.
I'm not sure it's a non-musical also. That's the same reason why various Monty Python numbers aren't listed as well.
I love this list, even though it tortures me. I feel like I have 3 or 4 suggestions on the tip of my brain, and yet I can't quite bring any to the tip of my tongue.
Me too. I thought for sure I'd come up with tons, but I haven't. Yet. 8^)
How about Tom Cruise singing Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock 'N Roll" in Risky Business. Also, Ferris Bueller singing "Twist and Shout" and "Danke Shen" (spelling?) during the parade.
FYI Danke Schoën, I believe
I bet UncRoger is kicking himself for not adding the Ferris Beuller numbers when he kicked off the list. :-)
The only problem is that I'm not sure those qualify as "great". I thought the Ferris numbers were kind of gratuitous (dunno if that's right; it's late and I'm tired) and unnecessary. I'll have to think about it...
Well, yes, they were purely gratuitous, but still fun to watch.
This may not fit your idea of "musical number" exactly, but I really liked Audrey Hepburn singing "Moon River" in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
This list has been plaguing me for a few days now. I know I know more scenes that would fit into this category, I just can't think of them.
At one point he closed two bin lids together, jumped and danced with a girl and a dog, onthebroadway and gathered a large crowd of people after him.
