Modern:
History of the World - JM Roberts (Best one-volume attempt I know of...)
Will and Ariel Durant - The Story of Civilization (best mutli-volume attempt I am aware of)
HG Wells - The Outline of History (admirable and highly influential early attempt at the impossible)
