Well there is a kiss of death if I ever heard one :) How about a list of great books that should never been made into films. I would recommend Catch-22 and Moby Dick.
Actually, there was a film version of Moby Dick done a few years ago, on the A&E network I believe, which starred Patrick Stewart. Not bad at all; Stewart does a very believable job as Ahab, but the truth is the book doesn't translate very well onto cinema.
Gravity's Rainbow, that would just be an impossible task. It's way too convoluted and crazy. Catcher in the Rye, it has a feel that a movie could never capture, plus way too many expectations due to the book's stature.

I see you have that already covered. I should look a little closer before typing.
