the thing is a different interpretation of a novel... I would personally say that qualifies it as an original and not a remake, but thats a matter of opinion, you could technically say the same about any remake just being a re-interpretation of a script, but I think when a novel is involved and the movies are so different, it's another matter.

That's one way to look at it, I guess.

i guess my point is that it's not really a remake if the 'remake' could have been made even if the first one never existed... the way i see it anyway.

Yeah, I agree, multiple adaptations of books or plays shouldn't count as remakes. Is every film version of Romeo and Juliet a remake of this silent French film? I think not.

If the filmmakers approach the project as a remake, for example if they say going into the project that they're going to remake the movie, then it is a remake.

Good to know that 15 and 17 are good remakes. I trust your opinion, so I'll watch them without trepidation.

I can vouch for the ladykillers... it's good, it even stands up as one of the better coen brothers movies, which to my knowledge is just about all of them.

What is for a few dollars more a remake of?

I think that was a mistake, I only meant to have A Fistful of Dollars (1964) on this list which is a remake of Yojimbo (1961) and not For a Few Dollars More (1965).
