These lists refer to artists who first had success, whether commercial or critical, within a band or group context and then either left the group or went solo after the demise of the group. By successful here, I prefer to use critical criteria to commercial, therefore Phil Collins will not appear on this list...








How about Eric Clapton (Cream)? Mark Knoppfler (Dire Straits)?
I think they might fit into the Phil Collins category. sorry dude.
Eric Clapton probably would qualify, except that I so naturally think of him as a completely solo artist, maybe because he jumped from band to band so much in his early career. Also, I enjoy Dire Straits but I haven't heard Knopfler's solo work...
