  • Comment: As each of the Beatles went their own way, George Harrison started recording All Things Must Pass, using both new and old material. What he came up with was this triple-disc set, of almost 2 hours long. Certainly, the ambition was there and also apparant in the songs. But the remarkable thing is, it works. The length never really bothers, as all the songs are among the best Harrison has written since Something and that must've been quite a pleasant surprise for all critics and Beatles fans at the time. The only problem with the set is the end, the so-called Apple Jam. At this point, all ambition seems to be gone, and there's just a long jam with George's friends. Unfortunately, these looser, instrumental songs have a wrong effect and just get boring near the end. But I can't complain about the first 3/4 of the album.

I just recently finished listening to all of George's solo output (not counting the experimental stuff he did while still a Beatle, though I will get to that in time), and I must be the only one who finds Cloud Nine extremely overrated.

I mean, I like it, it was definitely the best thing he had done in almost a decade, but I think it pales majorly in comparison to all of his albums except for Dark Horse, Somewhere in England, and Gone Troppo.
