Author Comments:
The clips are VERY short, so downloading shouldn't be a problem. I have no idea how difficult this will be for people, but I tried to pick songs that most people will have heard (i.e. no post rock or neo-classical power metal, hehe).
Feedback wanted!
(on this game and my others)

Gosh, I can't positive ID any of these, although 7 and 8 sound awfully familiar, and 10 reminds me of Crimson and Clover (or Heroin), but I'm sure it's neither. Damn, this is a good game. Can't wait for someone to nail some of these tunes!
Great game! A lot of these sound familiar. Here are my best guesses...
#2 - "Mellow Yellow" by Donovan
#4 - Is this classical music? Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", perhaps?
#6 - I'm pretty sure this is from Dark Side of the Moon, but all those songs kinda blend together for me
#8 - This kinda sounds like the opening to "Don't Be the Bunny" from the musical Urinetown. It definitely sounds like a showtune.
#10 - "My Generation" by the Who (I think)
2 and 10 are correct! The fact that you mistook some sound clips for other songs means this game is pretty cool, I think.
8 is pretty tricky, I'll admit, unless you're very familiar with the song. In fact, it could be the opening of several songs, but the distinctive piano tone should eventually give it away to someone.
Oh wait. #6 isn't Dark Side of the Moon. It's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", right? Or am I wrong again?
I'm sorry to have so much fun at your expense. #6 is not a Pink Floyd song, though I admit it sounds like it should be.
Damn. I give up then.
BTW, I wish I had the necessary computer literacy to make a game like this. Great idea.
Oh, it's quite simple. I could teach my dog to do it with about 1 page of text (if he could read, and if he had fingers, that is). You, maybe half a page.
Try me. Perhaps I'll try my hand at my own game like this.
Okay, here's the easiest approach that doesn't require the expensive software I prefer to use (but is basically the same process).
A very basic step-by-step that you should be able to follow, assuming you have the basic computer literacy implied by your use of Listology.
1. Make a list of songs whose clips you want to feature.
2. Download LAME - it is the encoder we'll be using to compress the audio data into MP3. Unzip (I'm assuming you have Winzip and know how to use it? If not, say so and I'll explain) the file you just downloaded to a place you can remember.
3. Download and install Audacity, the program you will be using to isolate the sound clips.
4. Once you've installed Audacity, run the program and open the first file you'd like to extract a clip from (whether it's a song file on your hard drive or a track from a CD in your CD drive shouldn't matter).
5. Find the section of the song you'd like to clip out in the song timeline (the long series of vertical lines of different lengths). Hit the play button to play the song. Click on the song timeline anywhere to reposition your cursor, hit stop, then play again to play from that point in the song.
6. Once you have determined where in the song timeline your desired clip appears, you must highlight it. To do this, click and hold the left mouse button at the start of your sound clip, drag to the end of the clip, and release.
7. Hit Play to verify that you've selected the correct portion of the song. You can extend or contract either end of your selection by clicking on an edge of the selection (your cursor will change to a pointing hand) and dragging it, just as you did to initially make the selection. Keep hitting Play and readjusting your highlighted selection until you are satisfied.
8. Click File -> Export Selection as MP3.
9. I generally save the file to my Desktop to make everything easy, since I won't be keeping the file after I upload it to the web anyway. Also, be sure to name the file nebulous so that we can't guess the clip by the filename. Save the file.
10. You will be prompted to find the LAME encoder you downloaded and installed in step #2. Click "yes" and navigate to the folder you unzipped the LAME file to. Select the lame_enc.dll that was extracted there and click 'Open.'
11. You will be prompted to edit the ID3 tags for the file. Clear every field so no one can guess the clip through the metadata (unless you want to leave hints that way). Click OK.
12. Congrats! You've created your first clip! Open the next song. Audacity will open it in a new program window, so you can close the old one. If it prompts you about saving changes, select 'no.'
13. Repeat the steps (only this time, you won't be prompted to locate the LAME encoder file) until you've created all of your song clips.
14. Now you should have all of your song clips in .mp3 format in a convenient folder (I suggested your Desktop). We have to get them online, now. Does your ISP provide file storage? If not, or if you don't know how to use it, no problem. I can set up an account for you with a free file hosting service and teach you how to use it.
Any problems/questions, let me know. Of course, this was all written assuming you're running a recent version of Windows (98 and up should do the trick).
BTW, if you want to make an image game, it's FAR simpler in every way, and I can teach you that, too.
Congratulations! You managed to guide me through a multi-step computer process without (1) me getting lost, (2) my computer being totally unable to do something you said, and (3) me giving up out of boredom. This is very, very rare for me. I might get actually get my clip game up and running by tomorrow! Thank you very much for all your help!
However, I don't think AOL allows file storage, because is incredibly LAME. So where do you suggest I go for free file storage?
Shyper - FTP and browser upload, web manager, no ads, no filesize limits, 100 MB limit, 10 GB bandwidth monthly, more.
000k - FTP and browser upload, web manager, no ads, no filesize limits, instant activation, 125 MB limit, 500 MB bandwidth monthly, more.
100Webspace - Browser upload, web manager, no ads, 100 MB limit, 1 GB bandwidth monthly, more.
And, I'm very glad you found my guide useful and followable. I'm currently working on an all-in-one guide to creating Listology games. I'd greatly appreciate your comments here or there on how to improve the guide.
And, AOL sucks ass.

Ahh. I knew I'd hit a bump in the road somewhere. I decided to go for 100Webspace (after 000k seemed to think that the dot in my AJDaGreat@aol.com e-mail address was an invalid character), but I can't figure it out. I think I uploaded a clip correctly, but I can't find where I should play it.
If it's easier for you to instruct me, I'll e-mail you my login and site-assigned password. Lemme know. And thanks again for all your help!
Yeah, send your info to lukeprog@hotpop.com, I'll check it out and get back to you.
That's pretty strange about 000k.
Curses, Jim, for not spending a million on Listology advertising so that there are more people playing my game, which would result in ALL of these being solved by this time.
But it's all good - I'm certain they'll all eventually be guessed, it just may take a while for the right people to come along, or for people that are playing to have the song trigger correctly in their minds.
Well, if I can't get you the traffic you want the least I can do is try to solve one myself:
#1: "Mama" by Genesis
5, 6, and 8 are torturing me.
hehehehe
and yes, it's 'Mama'
I hope this helps to put an end to torture:
8. Three Dog night - One
yup!
Ahhhh, blessed relief.
But, hot pokers 5 and 6 are still prodding you, right? MUAHAHAHAHAHA!
5 - Too Shy, Kagajoogooboodoo
My, I hate that band...
Give credit to my wife. She heard it while I was playing the samples and made the call.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I hate the song too.
It's absolutely hilarious the way you got that one :-)
I'm dumfounded that no one recognizes #3. Hint: it's from a VERY popular video game.
Ohhhh. Video game music. Good call.
Let's see... my first inclination is that it's from Banjo-Kazooie. Is that right?
Nope, but good guess. Platformer, yes, but a bit older than that.
I think in my next game like this I'll include longer sound clips. Do you think that would help, or is it more likely that these items aren't being guessed because people have actually never heard the songs?
Hmm... well, the "My Generation" one took me a couple listens before I identified it. Maybe with a longer sound clip, I could've gotten it quicker. But you want it to still be challenging, don't you?
If that's not Banjo-Kazooie, I don't think I know any others. I made some wrong guesses earlier; maybe if the clips were longer, I could've realized that my guesses were wrong and not guessed them. But then where's the fun in that?
I would say keep things the way they are. I'll just have to count on someone else to get the Genesis songs, the Three Dog Night songs, and the Kajoogooboodoomoofoo songs.
Woo! Is 7 The MacGuyver theme song?
(This game is awesome. Pure genius.)
'fraid not, though it is from TV.
Sneaky. Magnum PI?
no, no - nothing like that :-)
It's a lot easier when Winamp pops up the titles.
D'oh! Fixed.
But, now that you know, I'll have to kill you...
So... the longer clips haven't helped anybody?
#7 is some sort of promo for football games im not sure which station, cbs maybe
VERY close. Wrong sport and station, but getting there...
since you're so close anyway, it's:
"[sport] on [station]"
#3 could be the music that plays in mario 3 on the map screen when choosing a level
VERY close. Try another Mario game :-)
#3 is from Super Mario World...
hurray!
I think #6 is from a Dire Straits song but I can't place which one, and I know I have heard #9 but ...
#6 is not a Dire Straits song, sorry.
#9 is the most recent song on the list.
7 Is the NBA on TNT i think
close enough! NBA on NBC.
# 9 - Train - Calling All Angels
yay!
I grow tired of this game. :-) So, here are some BIG clues.
'Echoing Piano' is a from a Philip Glass movie score.
'Growing Sound' is from a song by my favorite artist.
yikes, and I was so sure this would make these ones easy!
hmmm... okay, additional hints, then:
'Echoing Piano' occurs during a memorable sailboat scene in this Philip Glass-scored film.
'Growing Sound' is from an 'immutable' Queen song.
Okay, okay. Is #4 from The Truman Show?
yay :-)
For a similar game, try this one, wherein you match video games with their sound effect!
