I'd suggest Jay Leno.
I heartily second the opinion on Jim Carrey! =D
I've always been more "Letterman" than "Leno". Jay Leno's funny, but I wouldn't personally call him one of the funniest people alive. But that's my opinion. :)
Leno was a funny guy, then he took on the late night gig, and he has been in eternal decline ever since.
Letterman oozes comedy. There is no comparison between the two.

I've only seen one episode of David Letterman's show, but I was really bored by it. I hated how he kept repeating the same phrase twenty times per episode and hoped it kept getting funnier (it didn't). Maybe I caught him on a bad night. I'm not a big Jay Leno fan either, though. I'll take Jon Stewart over either one, hands down.
Yeah, Jon Stewart's great. Conan's still my all-time favorite late-night host though.
