  • guarding the moon by francesca lia block - a poetic (and quick) read about this author's first year with her baby girl, jasmine. best known for her young adult "weetzy bat" series, it was refreshing to hear more of the author's true voice--and still see the similarities in her creative language.
  • living to tell the tale: a guide to writing memoir by jane taylor mcdonnell - a bit controversial in some of her stances (magnified by her choice of vivian gornick as foreward author), but mcdonnell has some great insights and advice about how to jump-start a memoir.
  • the accidental buddhist by dinty moore - a great primer into the types of buddhism from an outside perspective. perhaps slightly dated now, but still an amusing tale of one man's quest to figure out how the practice of this religion might fit into modern american culture.

  • natural history of the senses by diane ackerman - i listened to this on audiotape but it was really quite fascinating. i may have to read the text as well so that i can ponder it some more.
  • steal this audiobook by ben stiller and janeane garofalo - i thought this would be better on tape since they read it so you can get a sense of the delivery... but it was really pretty uninteresting.

  • sex, drugs & cocoa puffs by chuck klosterman - spin writer and pop culture philosopher, chuck klosterman may not win a ton of fans with this collection of essays but he certainly won me over... but then, i'm interested in what pamela anderson lee, reality television, guns-n-roses cover bands, and movies like "left behind" say about our culture. this book may be have an expiration date, so read it fast. you may not agree with everything he utters (neither did i) but it's an engrossing read!
