Films: Watched in 2002

Tags:

You must be psyched that 2002 is off to such an auspicious start for you . . . All 7s and 8s so far!

Yes, it was going pretty good, mostly because I was trying to catch up on some purported good stuff from 2001. And then I saw that piece of dreck Orange County. I knew it wasn't going to be "good" but I didn't think it was going to be that bad. Especially from Jake (The Zero Effect) Kasdan.

Orange County was my first "official" 2002 film. I think your first "official" film of the new year always sucks. My first "official" 2001 film last year was Hannibal which kinda sucked, too.

Panic was such a pleasant surprise for me. It makes me happy every time I see it favorably mentioned on a list.

Well, Jim, I watched it completely based on your (and a few others) favorable comments on Listology. It was a good watch.

I really like the format you've settled into on this list! Lots of information (IMDb link, rating, viewing venue, and "my thoughts"). I'm especially pleased that you've started writing notes to go along with certain entries. I do think it makes the list-sharing experience richer, and I find myself gravitating towards lists that offer details along with rankings.

Why, thanks, Jim! I'm glad too that I'm finally annotating some of my entries. One's opinion carries more import (I think) when you can jot down a few words about the subject matter. I think the key for me was realizing I didn't have to write full-length reviews.

As you've noted on other lists I'm amazed at how much easier it is to write about movies you have an issue with or didn't like then movies that you enjoyed. Maybe that's why the talking heads on TV and radio always sound so negative because it's so much easier to talk negatively about a subject.

Case in point: I'm still planning on writing something up for Fellowship of the Ring theatrically. I've seen it twice and think I might like to see it again maybe on DVD before I finalize my thoughts. It should be easier than this for movie I liked so much.

YEEEE-OOHHHCCCH! A 6 rating for The Big Sleep?

So Spider-Man is a better film?

Wow... This is the Bogie version, yes?

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs (Who is just pickin' on ya!)

I would say that The Big Sleep is probably my least favorite classic "film noir" movie seen to date. The plot was way too convoluted and even now, after finishing it up some 16 hours, ago the movie has almost completely faded from my memory. I have seen quite a few "noir" films, including Sunset Blvd., The Third Man, The Manchurian Candidate, Touch of Evil, Double Indemnity, Night of the Hunter and The Killing (a favorite) so I think that I know what they're going for in the genre, but man did The Big Sleep bore the pants off of me.

I don't generally do direct comparisons across genres and even though Spider-Man might suffer from the recently seen syndrome, (as I guess The Big Sleep does or should) when recently watched films sometimes get better rated than they should , I'm comfortable with those ratings as of now.

After the first time I saw Spider-Man it was a definite 6 but after seeing it again and having a chance to watch the stuff going on around the main characters, seeing the big picture as opposed to just keeping up with the cool effects, I ended up rating Spider-Man a 7 of 10 for a Good rating, but just barely. I really don't think there's an excess frame of film in that movie and the thing which bothered me the most the first time I saw it, the pacing which seemed very slow, seemed perfect, almost robust, the 2nd time through.

What can I say? That's the way they played for me. Your mileage may vary. ;-)

I certainly can respect your lukewarm reaction to The Big Sleep. It may be a noir, but it certainly does not satisfy many of the traditional requirements of one. The plot *is* convoluted and impossible to untangle, and I would venture that those of us who love the film love it for reasons other than solving the mystery that frankly remains mysterious. Can a combustible atmosphere and a shower of sexual sparks set a film on fire when the story remains so submerged? Probably one's answer to this question will be the same as the answer to the question of whether one loved the film...

As you can tell, I'm on the yes side!

I always enjoy your honest and far-ranging opinions and ratings. I would love to see more comments here, especially for films such as The Big Sleep, but with the number of films you seem to watch, I can understand that that might be difficult to maintain.

Keep up the great work!

Shalom, y'all!

P.S. - I would love to hear your thoughts about Insomnia and About a Boy, as I am seriously considering seeing both of these films, especially the former.

Shalom, y'all!

Thanks for the Insomnia thoughts!

I remember watching the featurette on The Big Sleep DVD. If I recall correctly, somebody once asked Chandler, "wait a minute, who killed the chauffeur?" After pondering for a moment he admitted that he didn't know. I might have the details wrong, but it was definitely something like that. Afterwards, I didn't feel so bad about being completely lost.

And I'd like to second LBangs' sentiments regarding comments. Dan, I love your lists, but I keeping waiting for more "my thoughts" links! Their absence is certainly understandable given how much material you cover, but I just thought I'd chime in as to what your fans are looking for. :-)

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys! I'll definitely see what I can do about getting some thoughts up there.

Glad to see Minority Report get high marks - I'm sad that I'm likely to miss its theatrical run. You must have HATED Rollerball; I can't remember the last time I saw a 4 rating from you.

Oh. I suppose I could have reviewed this very list to find your most recent 4 rating. Whoops!

I need to see Minority Report again. To tell you the truth I didn't much care for it. The movie itself was a visual marvel, the story was above average and the performances were all pretty good. It just didn't gel as a whole for me. It was almost too antiseptic. I got no sense of character motivation from any none of the leads.

I'll have to write up my thought on Rollerball. That should be easy considering how bad it was. And the last movie I gave a 4 to was Orange County my first 2002 film of the year. I actually ranked Rollerball higher because I wasn't expecting much. I expected a lot from Orange County because of the Jake Kasdan (Zero Effect) factor.

Ah, interesting. I just brushed up on your rating system and it sounds like more of a 6 than a 7 based on these comments. I'm still looking forward to it, but I no longer feel so bad about giving it a miss in the theaters. :-)

It sounds like Dan and I had some of the same thoughts about Minority Report. It is very sound visually and the concepts are intriguing but the characters are less than stimulating and just more stock caricatures. The plot left me wanting much more. Well worth a viewing but I was a little disappointed.

Well, don't completely take my word for it. I mean it did get rave critical reviews, 94% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and the IMDB has it up to an 8.5 rating with a Top 250 ranking of #88 of all time. So obviously there's a fan base for it.

I liked it better than A.I. which was also a disappointment for me. But I think Spielberg is trying to hard to do Kubrick in recent films, and I just don't think he's that good at it.

Why'd you see Scooby-Doo twice?

Because it was that good! :-) No, just joking.

On Tuesday my girlfriend and I were near the theater with no plans on seeing a movie. Out of nowhere she says "hey, let's go see a movie!" I told her that I thought we'd seen everything worth seeing. But I said maybe we should just go see a film that we had the least interest in seeing. Our only 2 choices were Mr. Deeds and Scooby-Doo. So we picked Scooby-Doo.

Then on Friday I was babysitting my sister's kids and they wanted to go see a movie. This time our choices were Lilo & Stitch or Scooby-Doo. I asked them which one of them their mom was most likely to take them to see and they said Lilo & Stitch so I took them to the other one.

It's not a great movie by any means but I actually had a lot of fun watching it, both times.

You're such a tease. Nine consecutive "My Thoughts" links (a very encouraging run - I hope it continues!), but 5 of them have "Coming Soon" placeholders. You sure know how to keep a guy on the edge of his seat. :-)

Dan you are the only one on this site that I think comes close to my movie viewing history. I always appreciate your lists.

Thanks, Jim! You mean in quantity of films. Or just the way that I bounce around? Or that you and I see to pick similar movies? Do tell! :-)

Hopscotch a mere five? My wife would be disappointed. :-) One of the movies of her youth. Ah well, so it goes, I'm definitely looking forward to your thoughts on that one!

Keep encouraging me! My internet connection at home has been down since Saturday.

7 out of 10 for Scotland, PA! I'm always particularly intrigued when a movie I've never heard of gets such a high rating from you. Would you mind sharing your thoughts?

Damn, Jim. I owe you some thoughts, big time!

:-) No pressure. I do remain curious about those two though. I hope you get your connection back up!
