- (Nov 10) Funny Games (1997, Michael Haneke) [55] Spoiler: Highlight to viewIt´s the first Haneke I´ve seen and I already see why people loves his films; this in particular seems hypocritical at first, then becomes a joke, and finally reveals its nasty mechanics. It´s clever, but too calculated for my taste; it wants an active spectator but I think there are other, less vile ways to reach that level of intensity in films. I think every major change in the plot tries to subvert the modus operandi of psycho-thrillers, going too far as to imply all the film would be a dark comedy. And that was the more disturbing element in the film. I am referring to moments like when the wife says "What?" after a pause when the bad boys communicate their decision of killing all the family. And also the 10 minute sequence after the kid death; Haneke uses hyperrealism to justify himself in its anti-violence attitude, but all goes too long in its self-reflexiveness and artfulness that all could be a dark joke. And i´m afraid that´s it. In conclusion, this is a contradictory but powerful film for contradictory viewers like myself. But don´t expect I´ll be loving that film. Just admire it and think about it, which is no small feat.
- (Nov 10) Edmond (2005, Stuart Gordon) [59]
- (Nov 13) The Cremator (1968, Juraj Herz) [10]
- (Nov 16) /Trust/ (1990, Hal Hartley) [72]
- (Nov 17) Il tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave (1972, Sergio Martino) [65] (A well-made giallo despite its unevenness; Watch it especially for Edwige Fenech´s body; she´s easily the hottest actress I´ve seen in a movie. And don´t forget the erotism in (a lot of) scenes and even some really hot lines of dialogue. Now you know why it is a 67. Well, you can also watch it for the skillfully directed suspense (the hitchcockian build-ups.)Spoiler: Highlight to viewit´s a very free retelling of Poe´s The Black Cat where the plot seems very complex until the unnatural twists are revealed. Some passages of the story are used to good effect, others are fit into the story without a thoughtful reflexion.

Hey, you have the same rating scale as me. That's nice, finally somebody else to compare my ratings to ;-)
How about this:

I joined; it will be interesting, for sure.
i love saw 2 :( :)
Well, it´s a lot better than the first but I still found it subpar.
I'm glad you also loved dishonored. From the four (?) Sternberg films I've seen it was by far the best. I probably wouldn't rate it as highly, but put it somewhere in the low 80s - which still makes it one of the best films of all times, imho ;-)
And great to see that someone else wasn't overwhelmed by "The Navigator". So far the weakest Keaton feature film I've seen.
What did you like so much about Apocalypto? Ir ated it somewhere in the 30s if I recall correctly. It was a great ride, but of rather poor quality. I'd love to watch it again though as it is very powerful stuff.
Yes, Dishonored has become one of my favorite films. It has a powerful ending that almost made me cry, it has Dietrich at his best, and it´s simply one of those feminist works that don´t get made very often. Apart from these things, the best of the movie is the magical montage and the use of diegetical music (great directorial decisions). One subjetive reason for loving this picture would be my love for cats.
And about Apocalypto I would say it´s only a great over-the-top ride which confronts man and nature. Gibson sees the mayans as animals but he finds humanity in them: it has at least two scenes of tragic beauty. But I must say in this type of movie I prefer better efforts like Predator or the more similar Conan the Barbarian. I would´t watch it again but it worked so well at the theater...
Yes it worked well in the theater. I especially love the ending, when the SPaniards arrive. Speaking of the big fish swallowing the smaller ones. Who would have thought there could be worse coming along...
I liked Aparajito even more than Pather Panchali. the first would get a high 70 rating, the second a (low?) 80s. Haven't seen the third installment yet.
I haven't seen it and considering I didn't like the first I'm not expecting much, but 28 Weeks Later is that bad? Damn.
Have you seen any worse movies?
