Is your "coming up" list a Netflix queue or something?

Well, sort of, but not really. I have copies of all of them right now; they're just sitting around waiting to be watched. Of course, a couple of these aren't really out on DVD yet, to which I can only reply that I am a terrible, terrible person.

So, those movies that aren't really out on DVD yet, do you, uh, watch them on your computer or burn them to DVDr and watch them on TV?

I have a computer hooked up to an LCD projection TV. I burn most to DVDr and watch it from that, though I watch some on a 17" monitor if someone is watching TV or if it's late (since I pathetically live with my parents).

I wouldn't mind living with my parents, if they paid all the bills and let me watch as many movies as you do!

Your TV link doesn't work, but I probably couldn't afford one, anyway. I'll have to make do with with a cheapo video projector, if I can find one that doesn't completely suck.

Ah, it's basically just a 55" TV. I wanted a 'home theater' projector, so I could watch things on a massive screen, but since I wasn't paying, I had no choice in the matter.

...just a 55" TV.

Sounds good to me. :-)

With technology today, home viewings can be just as rewarding as going to the theatre. And DVD and the internet have sorta equalized things in that you don't need to live in NYC or L.A. to see obscure stuff.

Wow, I have read few statements today I disagree with quite so much as the above.

Your statement, of course, is an opinion, but I would like to point out a few facts that contribute to our disagreement over the opinion.

First, there is a palpable, aesthetic difference between an image made up of light shot through film and an image made up of pixels. Even digital projection looks different than either of those two. You could develop a television screen and a storage medium that has more resolution than a projected film, and the images would still be different in the same way video looks different than film looks.

Second, there is a difference between watching a film in a room with two or three people or by yourself and sitting in the dark with strangers gazing up at a glowing movie. You can argue they are equally as enjoyable, and that is a matter of opinion (one I would argue with, but still, an opinion), but they are certainly different experiences.

These facts, often ignored, make the two experiences very different. You say they are just as rewarding. Fair enough. I disagree.

And there, we shake hands and remain friends. :)

Shalom, y'all!

I don't think dayfornight meant that the two experiences are the same, but that technology has made for a feasible, rough equivalent theater at home.

For example, there are only 2 theaters in my town. They both play the same movies (the smaller one plays a subset of what the larger one is playing), and they only play the currently popular Hollywood films. I'm unable to see anything else in a theater setting, but through DVDs, high definition TVs, etc I'm able to create a different, but similar setting to watch movies in.

You can certainly have a much better experience watching film at home today than you can when I was young. I certainly will not argue that.

By "With technology today, home viewings can be just as rewarding as going to the theatre", I assumed he meant "With technology today, home viewings can be just as rewarding as going to the theatre", and that is what I disagree with.

But I wouldn't fistfight somebody over it...

Shalom, y'all!

All I'm saying is that I've had some extremely unrewarding viewing experiences in movie theatres over the past few years thanks to cell phones, chattering teenagers, scratched prints, etc. And, I've had some wonderful experiences at home thanks to current home theatre technology. Hopefully, though, there are plenty of wonderful theatre viewing experiences in my future, because Austin is home to the Alamo Drafthouse chain. :-)

I would like to thank you for using the words "palpable" and "aesthetic" not only correctly but in succession... which was quite rewarding and refreshing in a variety of different ways.

Good to see some love for Serenity. I thought that it was by far the best movie of 2005, and perhaps even my personal favorite of all time...not that you could guess that I'm a huge Browncoat by my screenname or anything...

*ahem*

I haven't seen any of Firefly, so I didn't know what to expect sitting down to watch Serenity. It was surprisingly good, and I'll probably look into seeing the series sometime.

Hope you do...it's even better than the movie!

Guess the CGI in "Transporter 2" didn't bother you that much, eh?

I didn't mind it too much. The whole movie is ridiculous, but I thought it was a fun watch.

How does the extended cut of "Underworld" compare to the original? I ask only because I have a mad crush on Ms. Beckinsale.

I haven't seen the original cut. My sister tells me they added some background information for some characters, but I don't know how much more screen time Beckinsale gets, if any. She does look great in that outfit though.

Hmm, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." I've been looking for that, but...um, can't seem to find it.

Didn't like Infection, huh? Damn. As a fan of Asian horror, I wanted to watch that one next.

It's decent, I guess. The plot is dumb and it's crudely made, but it has sort of a Silent Hill-esque atmosphere; that may just be the hospital setting talking though (Christophe Gans better not screw up the Silent Hill movie - the trailer looks promising).

Wow, Tsotsi wasn't any good, then? I've heard many mixed things about it, but I also know that it won Audience Favorite at the Edinburgh Film Festival (ironically--at least in my case--narrowly edging out Serenity), and after it won the Oscar, I was interested in it.

Well, I'm downloading a copy, so we shall see...

It's like City of God... but crappy.

I couldn't stand that the main character just stood around with a blank, stoic face the entire movie. I get that he's supposed to be an emotionless thug, but in order to pull off the stoic attitude, you have to be cool. This guy is just dull. I also couldn't figure out if I was supposed to feel sympathetic toward his situation or hate him for being so stupid.

Maybe you'll find some worth in it though.

It's the classics week in family hinterland or what? ;)

Yeah, something like that. I'm finally getting around to watching some of the supposedly great older movies. Some of them are proving to be duds though.

Yeah, I guess some of them are. I don't like Rosemary's Baby at all too.

The Promise (Kaige Chen, 2005) [6+]

You gave "Wu ji" 6+ ?????
I can't belive this. I watched the film at the berlinale festival, and EVERYBODY I talked with absolutely hated this piece of sheet. I agreed with many people that this is probably the worst in-competition film in a festival since WWII, and a close contender for worst movie ever.
I really would like to know what you saw in the film.
A friend of mine who was in the press screening at the berlinale, told me that after the screening everything was dead quite. Nobody clapped, nobody said a word.
And it's not so bad that it's good, it's just plain horrible. One of the rare films that I wanted to end after only 15 minutes.

I've noticed there's a lot of distaste for it, but I don't see what everyone's so worked up about. Sure, the CGI is extremely cheesy, the weapons looked like toys, especially in the barbarian battle, and the plot has problems, but I had a lot of fun with it. It's certainly nice eye candy.

I suppose people are expecting an intelligent, serious wuxia film (House of Flying Daggers, Hero, or something similar) and instead they're getting something more cartoony. And a festival setting probably heightens this expectation (and disappointment).

I give The Promise about the same rating I gave to the superhero comedy Sky High. This is a stretch of a comparison, but both are cartoony hero tales; The Promise is, to me, a wuxia cartoon with a serious tone. If that makes any sense.

I would like to have your objectivity or patience with films. Maybe then I would be enjoying more of them. As it is, I cringe at the painful moments I had to "experience" while watching this promise...

I warn you, New Police Story will be a waste of your time. ;)

Snakes on a plane a better movie than La Dolce Vita?

Haha, last year someone was aghast at my rating 8 1/2 the same as Be Cool. I just really dislike Fellini's work. Maybe I just don't get Fellini, but I've found everything I've seen by him absolutely boring. La Strada being the most tolerable.

I really only watched La Dolce Vita because I was in Rome back in July and went on a mini tour of the city; La Dolce Vita was mentioned on the tour. So I found seeing landmarks like the Trevi Fountain again more interesting than the actual plot.

And, of course, Snakes on a Plane isn't trying to be anything other than mindless fun, and mostly succeeds at that.

haven't seen any Fellini, but did see Snakes on a plane, and found it boring.
