Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) [05/10] ~ At its core, this movie has one very major flaw and that's the material on which it's based, Stephen Vincent Benet's poem The Sobbin' Women which is modernization of the Roman myth of the Rape of the Sabine Women. That the plot of the movie follows the original story in such a blithe manner raised my hackles a few times and made me wonder who at MGM greenlighted such a project. The best part, and centerpiece, of the movie is the "dance-off" between the brothers and the townsfolk at the barn-raising. Howard Keel's singing was a little too grandiose and Jane Powell's was a little too high-pitched for my tastes. But it was good to see Russ Tamblyn and Julie Newmar in early roles before they got bigger in the 60s with West Side Story and Batman, respectively, and the quality of the choreography makes me want to see more films with Michael Kidd's involvement.
