What about The Straight Story? That looks like an interesting upcoming flick. (Election was OK... not worthy of the hype, but it had it's moments.)

david lynch and sissy spacek are on my Usually Avoid list, but i'll try to keep an open mind.

i just saw your list of "feelin' the need to see" movies. and i must say...DO NOT WATCH "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc." it is TERRIBLE. Luc Besson is the most overrated director in the history of cinema (after Jan De Bont).

well, of his work, i've only seen The Professional and Fifth Element, but i loved both--so i think i'll give it a try and make up my own mind. thanks for the feedback, though!

As long as you're rounding out your Luc Besson experience, you should check out La Femme Nikita. Pretty cool, if I remember correctly.

You may want to wait until SLEEPY HOLLOW hits the video stores. When I saw it I kept expecting Scooby and Scraggy to pop out of the woods.

i think i'll end up doing just that--or possibly the $1.50 theatre for the big screen... thanks for the tip!

I agree...you half-expect Christopher Walken to be unmasked and say something like "And I would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for you pesty kids!" pretty pitiful.

well, having seen it 3 times now (all on the big screen) i have to say i disagree about the Scooby-thing. i'm not saying it's scary in the way we expect to be frightened these days (blair witch, etc.) but i don't think that was burton's goal... i think it's more adult fairy-tale-esque, and for that, i love it!

I believe that's "Shaggy", my friend... gotta keep the cartoons straight. :)

But I agree completely... Old Man Walken was up to some dastardly deeds until the gang took the Depp Machine to look for clues.

And on a completely unrelated Scooby Doo-related thought, did anyone else want to see Scrappy Doo dead?

You mean Shaggy?!

Yes, La Femme Nikita is excellent, and so is The Big Blue, also directed by Besson, and starring Jean Reno.

I keep passing over The Messenger every time I go to our video store. Please post a review if you end up renting it. If you say it sucks, I'll give it a miss. But if you like it, I'll check it out (yes, I am using you as a human shield - hope you don't mind :).

Almost TWO MONTHS later and you STILL haven't seen The Messenger? What kind of human shield are you? You realize, of course, that you're getting dangerously close to having me rent it first? What happens if I don't like it? It will be your fault for not seeing it and warning me. Are you really prepared for such a crushing level of guilt?

:-)

Or do you too feel trepidation every time you actually have the box in your hand? I have yet to make it to the checkout counter without trading it in for something else.

yeah, jim--i know what you're saying 'bout the trepidation. i've even had $20 in free rentals (from the MCI/Blockbuster deal) and i *still* haven't wanted to rent it. i'm thinking it will end up being an accident when i do...

sorry i haven't been a better shield! LOL

It's gone! So did you see The Messenger, or decide you really didn't want to?

you caught me! (i can't get anything by you.) yeah, i decided it's probably going to be an accident if i do see it. i'm not opposed, but i'm also not going to go out of my way. i wonder at what point my mind changed...

taryn, since you don't like films that make you squeamish (or at least it seems that way) could I recommend pushing Toy Story 2 onto your view screen. i feel TS2 came darn close to being better than TS1 if not succeeding.

so i finally saw "toy story 2" over the holiday (with my lil twin 2-yr old brothers even) and it was sooooo good! sometimes i even forgot it was computer animation. i loved guessing who all the voices were too--so many good folks were involved.

and you may be onto something when you say it might have been better than the first one... i may have to check that one out again, though, before i decide. then i'll get back to you!

Are any of these "feelin' the need to see again" or are they all first-timers?

all first timers listed right now... why do you ask?

oh and delicatessen has moved up the list to *urgent* pretty quickly because i was so fascinated by amelie, and i've seen (and loved) jeunet's city of lost children... curious to see if i'll be able to see any parallels. i'm sure we've talked about it before, so i just thought you'd be interested to know it's next up.

Delicatessen is why I asked. :-) I remember you being a big proponent of City of Lost Children, but I didn't remember you not having seen Delicatessen. I was surprised.

Just for the record I was pretty disappointed with Iris (2001). I wrote a little blurb about it which might influence your priority levels somewhat.

Italian for Beginners is a great movie and has been playing at one of our local art house theaters for an absurd number of weeks now (6 or 7 maybe?). I recommend seeing it in the theater.

Less than 4 weeks until Spiderman which is officially my most anticipated film right now.

Lord of the Rings is awesome and needs to be seen in the theater. They recently added ~5 minutes of footage from the Two Towers to the end of the movie so it's a great time to see it.

I thought Harry Potter sucked.

The Others is good. Shadow of the Vampire is good.

Titan AE is just OK but worth seeing.

That's all for now. :-)

I'm also anticipating Italian for Beginners, which is supposed to open here this weekend.

You should check out Monsoon Wedding; I've a feeling you'll dig it.

Shalom, y'all!

You probably already know this, but Things You Can Tell was directed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez's son.

Shalom, y'all!

i didn't know that! actually it was just recommended to me by someone i recently met but who seems to be able to peg my tastes pretty well... (after a brief conversation and mutual viewing of amelie she asked if i'd ever seen "five senses"--not bad eh?)

in turn i gave her a list of 12 movies essential to see and i'm tryin to turn her on to listology as well but we'll see what kind of luck i have. *stay tuned*

Uncut recently ran a good review for Dirty Pretty Things, which also stars Audrey Tautou.

Shalom, y'all!

thanks for the tip! the plotline doesn't really do much for me but it would be interesting to see her playing a turkish immigrant... wouldn't want her to be typecast or anything.
