Author Comments:
This is a list of films that are in a foreign language (non-English) that were remade in another language (usually English). I was just curious to know how many of these films there were.

Another foreign movie remake was True Lies, although I can't remember the name of the original French movie.
Thanks, Sebreg. The film was La Totale! (1991)
Dan, I just found this list; thanks for posting it. There are several titles I was unaware of as being remakes of foreign films. Have you noticed that the remakes of good films are usually also good, which indicates to me that a good script is a large part of a good film (although I think several of these - not sure which - were scene-for-scene remakes and so borrowed from the original director, not just the screenwriter).
Hi, Bertie! In fact I have not noticed that the remakes of good films are usually good. But then I've not even come close to seeing all of the films on the list. Of what I have seen...
Point of No Return was NOT as good as La Femme Nikita
City of Angels was NOT as good as Der Himmel Uber Berlin
The Vanishing was NOT as good as Spoorloos
All of this could stem from the fact that in each case I saw the original before I saw the remake but who knows for sure...
Damn! Shot down in flames again. I'm having no luck at all at this list. I'll go back to admiring it from afar :-D
You can also make the argument that "Desperado", starring Antonio Banderas, was a "remake" of sorts of Richard Rodriguez's "El Marichi". Rodriguez, by the way, directed "Desperado".
I enjoyed this list very much. I just found out "Insomnia", which is absolutely one of my favorite films, is being remade (starring Al Pacino, if I'm not mistaken), so I'm looking forward to that with a bit of apprehension.
I have to disagree with Bertie's comment that the US-made remakes are just as good as the foreign-made originals. "The Birdcage" was just flat-awful, and "Point of No Return" was literally a scene-for-scene remake of "Nikita", made worse by the fact that Bridget Fonda was seriously miscast.
Just curious . . . What argument would you make that Desperado is a remake of rather than a sequel to El Mariachi?
Buck, his name is Robert Rodriguez not Richard. And I'm sorry you are welcome to make that argument but I can't. IMO Desperado is in no way, shape or form a remake of El Mariachi. Hence the reason Robert Rodriguez refers to his current film, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, as the 3rd film in this series.
Thanks for the positive feedback on the list. Yes, Insomnia will be starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Hilary Swank, Maura Tierney and Martin Donovan and is being directed by Christopher Nolan of Memento fame so it could be quite good, maybe even better than the original. I found the original to be too slow-moving for me.
Also, Bertie's actual comment is that remakes of good films usually result in good films. By his logic remakes of bad or so-so films should result in bad or so-so films. He's putting the impetus for quality on the script. Unfortunately I don't see that the remakes bare this out.
I agree that Point of No Return sucked compared to La Femme Nikita. But for someone who didn't have a point of comparison they might not realize the sort of potential that film had and would think that it was pretty decent.
Oops, my mistake! It just occured to me that there is a Richard Rodriguez, and his claim to fame is one that I don't think merits mention here. I guess the point I was making, which I didn't make very well previously, was that El Mariachi and Desperado have many similiarities between them, as they were made by ROBERT Rodriguez, hence the inference that Desperado was a remake of sorts.
I wasn't trying to rip into Bertie's opinion about bad films resulting in bad films, but I'm of the majority that believes a good film, whether it's foreign or US-made, doesn't merit a remake...but it's not going to stop me from seeing the new Planet of the Apes...
And I said nothing about bad films resulting in bad films :-E) (smiley face with clenched teeth).
Please don't ignore my weasel-wording: I said "usually".
Another small point on if it's a remake or not, La Jetee was a very short film composed of static pictures. I would say Twelve Monkeys was more "based on an idea" rather than a remake.
There was also a movie with Nick Nolte and Martin Short called Three Fugitives which was remade by the same director (Francis Veber) from his French film Les Fugitifs. I liked the American version of this. He also remade his own film My Father the Hero which I'd say was pretty bad. Never saw the French version of it though.
jokow11, thanks for the heads up on Three Fugitives. I have seen La Jetee and I think that that Twelve Monkeys does fall under a loose definition of remake.
im doing a study on remakes of films and i need a bit of help. im primarily looking at british films remade by hollywood. ive got a few but i could do with some more.Hollywood films remade by hollywood would be useful aswell. e-mail me at angel_with_a_pint_glass@hotmail.com
Thanks
Diane
I wonder, at what point do you consider a film "inspiration" for another, and at what point is it a remake? For example, I'd personally consider 13 Going on 30 a closer remake of Big than Twelve Monkeys is of La Jetee (though the inspiration is obvious).
And yes, I know Big and 13 Going on 30 wouldn't be listed anyway because neither is foreign-language.
