there are a lot of directors who have done a couple good movies, but if they've done things i'm adamantly opposed to--they don't get on this list. if they've achieved a certain level of greatness, however, i can forgive them. most of these names are enough to cause me to go see a movie. and i recommend those listed here, with the exception of stephen frears' absolution list. :)

Taryn, good call on some of the best directors that you witnessed. I think some of the best directors that I would include is Terry Gilliam, Jeanuet & Caro, Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, and of the greatest of all time: Akira Kurosawa! Thanks again for hanging out at the Little. Give me ideas on a list I should compose. Take care, Matt (aka veganic).

Great list! One correction: Singles was written and directed by Cameron Crowe. I don't think Tim Burton had anything to do with it. However, Burton's Ed Wood was excellent, and isn't on your list so far, if you want to make a replacement. :)

Burton has a cameo in Singles as a dating video director, which may account for the confusion, but as far as I know, that is the extent of his involvement with the project. Ed Wood is a great film, as is the mighty Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Shalom, y'all!

good call. i was just looking at this list of stuff he's been involved with on allmovie.com and missed the part that said Actor... thanks for the clarification, though! (btw, i have yet to see Ed Wood--but when i do, i'm sure i'll be adding it.)

Great call with Kieslowski, my fav director!

  • Wim Wenders - Wings of Desire!!! Lisbon Story, and the Buena Vista Social Club documentary
  • Peter Weir - Fearless, Dead Poets Society, Truman Show
  • Woody Allen - If you don't know, then shame on you! :) Annie Hall, Manhattan are the best 2.
  • Quentin Tarantino - This one's debatable, depending on your tastes...

PETER WEIR - FEARLESS !!!!! Always overlooked, but I will never forget it.

And no Stanley Kubrick...? Even if you aren't a Kubrick fan, you certainly can't overlook Dr Strangelove or 2001: A Space Odyssey

No David Lynch...? Same as above, but The ELephant Man and, maybe...Blue Velvet

I'm not a huge Kubrick fan, really. Sorry :) Sellers was wonderful in Dr Strangelove, but the directing wasn't wonderful. 2001, though, had great directing, I do admit that...

Also, Mamet is a clear fav of mine, not only does he write, but he directs, too! :)
The Spanish Prisoner, Oleanna, Homicide, Things Change, and House of Games. Oleanna especially is a great movie...I watched this at a college philosophy event and we discussed it afterwards...you'd be surprised how people can perceive the same story completely differently!

hey Phreak! where are your lists?!

(i know you have good taste, but you should really bust 'em out.)

...coming soon to a listology near you :P
As for now, I'm working on a list of procrastination reasons. So far, I've got a title...someday, I'll be finished with that...

do you know Wes Anderson did another movie in 1996 called bottle rocket? if you havnt seen it a really recommend it. i prefer it to Tenenbaums (maybe not rushmore) but its very good. Owen Wilsons best performance by far
