- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle-- Sherlock Holmes, of course, the all time favorite.
- Dorothy Sayers-- Lord Peter Wimsey, a member of the British aristocracy, is a great urbane detective and his romance with Harriet Vane is wonderful to follow.
- Ngaio Marsh-- Classic-style whodunits, often with a New Zealand angle.
- Sara Paretsky Hardboiled Chicago dick V.I. (Victoria) Warshawski's always getting into trouble.
- P.D. James-- The very-literary Roderick Alleyn's an incongruous and interesting sleuth.
- Kinky Friedman-- Good Texas jewboy fun (His own words, may I add!).
- James Lee Burke-- Louisiana atmosphere & a great Cajun detective, Dave Robichaux.
- Walter Mosely-- Easy Rawlins, of course.
Author Comments:
I have just realized that many of my faves are female authors... interesting... Agatha Christie, a classic, I like, but I don't go back to her very often, (and of course she's not doing any new work), therefore she didn't make the list.

My favorite newcomer is Dennis Lehane. You should also try some of Robert Parker's early stuff like THE JUDAS GOAT or MORTAL STAKES.
Just FYI, Ngaio Marsh wrote the Roderick Alleyn novels, PD James' very literary detective is Adam Dagleish. Also I would add my personal favorite Amanda Cross/Carolyn Heilebrun as another literary detective.
