An actor's essential performance doesn't necessarily mean it's a great performance worthy of an oscar but it does mean that it's one of the best I've seen the actor give.
How about Michael Powell from Peeping Tom
I've never heard of Michael Powell or the movie. Thanks for the recommendation.
I was trying to think of a current actor with that name and then I got it... Michael Powell the director of The Thief of Bagdad. It's been a long time since I've seen that or Kerr's work in Black Narcissus.
Schwarzeneggar in Total Recall? I thought Schwarzeneggar was just acting like himself. Anyway. Charles Laughton for Mutiny I agree with. And Henry Fonda for the Ox-Bow Incident
Arnold playing Arnold? Well, a lot of actors from Charles Chaplin to John Wayne can be accused of playing variations of the same part from movie to movie. Occasionally something different would come up. Something like John Wayne playing Genghis Khan. Different but not better.
The one-liners are pretty standard fare in Schwarzenegger movies but the plot twists in Total Recall gave him the most multilayered role of his career.
