I like this, a guide or essential's list of Burt Lancaster films. I saw the Train a few weeks back. It was excellent. Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield were both great, and Frankenheimer's earlier work is thrilling. I liked the distinctions between Lancaster and Scofield's character. LaBeif treasured the lives of people over art, and the Colonel treasured art of the lives of human beings. Strange at the end, the French Resistance Fighter most reluctant to save the Art from reaching Germany was the one who finally did save it at the end. And then, after the train is derailed and Nazis are dealt with, LaBeif just walks away and leaves the treasure by the train. It was a good movie about the Resistance FIghters too, shows how even the slightest action can stall an enemy long enough.

Paul Scofield teamed up with Lancaster years later in Scorpio, a spy drama, but the results were somewhat disappointing.
The subject of whether or not to protect art treasures is also a part of another Lancaster WWII movie... Castle Keep directed by Sidney Pollack. A film that should be seen in its widescreen edition.

I recently rewatched Scorpio and changed my opinion of it. It's a fine movie with fine performances.

Not yet seen Judgment at Nuremberg or Airport?

I've seen them both, but I wouldn't include either performance in the top 20.
