1. Wilow is George Lucas
2. This is Spinal Tap is Rob Riener
10. The Seventh Seal in Ingmar Bergman
14. Barry Lindon is Stanley Kubrick
BTW always honored.
Good job home boy.
my bad, I meant Ron Howard, George lucas produced it, plus I just watched American Graffiti, so they sort of mixed in my mind.
I knew what you meant, plus I thought you did write Ron Howard. My bad.
My kind of game...
4. Howard Hawks
5. Jonathon Demme
6. Martin Scorsese
7. Roman Polanski
9. Chaplin (?)
11. Sam Peckinpaw
12. Lumet (?)
15. Schlessinger (?)
17. David Lean
18. Hitchcock
19. Wise
20. Raelfson (something like that, I believe)
21. Wilder
22. De Palma
23. Scorsese, again
24. PT Anderson
25. John Ford
28. Eastwood ?
27. E. Kazan
I want to say Pal is 8, but I'm not sure why...
And I really should know 13, but I'm drawing a blank. I keep thinking Van Sant, but I believe I'm confusing this film with Private Idaho.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Wait a minute. 9 is Sica. I'm use to seeing the foreign title for this film...
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Gee bangs, did you feel like playing the game or what? Good job.
Trust me, you do one Critical Consensus list for a director using 25 sources or more, and you will never forget a single film he or she every made again.
Plus, when most people are so tired they can no longer read anything difficult or requiring a train of thought, they flip on the television. Me, I flip through rock and film guides.
Yes, it relaxes me. Ya don't need to tell me I'm weird. Already know... :)
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
28. Redford
29. Beatty
31. Cassavetes (?)
32. Roeg (?)
33. Traufaut
34. The great, extrememly under-rated Fosse
35. I keep think Korine, but he may have only written it.
36. Alan Parker (?)
37. Huston
38. Was this also Lean?
39. Roeg
40. Spielberg
Should I stop playing? Let me know...
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
8. is george Stevens and i know this bonly because i just finished watching this very funny move
36 was indeed Alan Parker
35 was Larry Clarke (Korine was the script writer)
32 was Nicholas Roeg
31 was John Cassavetes
lbangs you are too good man. I'm gonna pick some hard ones now.
I could kick myself for not remembering 30. I just saw a little special on this director a week or two ago when TCM reran Inherit the Wind. Why can't I remember his name? I keep think Norman something.
Alas.
Awaiting the harder ones with baited breath...
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Drats! I know 30 and 42 are the same guy, I just can't recall his name. Now you're toying with me!
44 - Terrence Malick
45 - Michael Apted
46 - George Miller
41 is a later film by a very famous director, but my mental block is acting up again. Is it Mankiewitz (sic)?
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
3. is Costas Gravas
Apparently this is becoming some sort of an epedemic...
3. Z - Costas-Gavras
30. Inherit the Wind - Stanley Kramer
38. The Killing Fields - Roland Joffe
41. Sleuth - Lawrence Olivier
42. Judgment at Nuremberg - Stanley Kramer
43. Oliver - Michael Curtiz
44. Days of Heaven - Terence Malick
45. The Up Documentaries - Michael Apted
46. Lorenzo's Oil - George Miller
I got all of those off the top of my head. Maybe I shouldn't play the director's version of this. Let me know if you'd like me to hold off.
Stanley Kramer! That's it! Why did this name elude me so long?!
Beat ya' to the draw on 44, 45, and 46 though. I'm red in the face not to remember Oliver, and Sleuth is a Mankiewitz film, I believe, though Olivier is certainly in it.
Great job on 38! For some odd reason, I always confuse The Killing Fields and A Passage to India up, hence my lame guess of Lean...
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
How in the living hell did anybody get the UP documentaries. Are we searching for these on internet sites? Dont get me wrong I'm not accusing, just wondering!
Totally off the top of my head. They are quite famous documentaries, you know, and he is also a narrative director as well. His name always stuck out to me since his nonfiction film seems to be better than his attempts at fiction.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I didn't search for the UP series on the Internet. I saw one of them I think it was either 21 or 28. I would say that Director's are my strong suit. I'd be interested in a challenge.
A challenge has been issued from dgeiser1 to jblack which I except. What kind of challenge. They are your rules. Lets do this.More new ones on the way.
i think between lbangs and i we can get them all. perhaps :-)
i believe The Falcon and The Snowman is John Schlesigner, too.
47. Rules of the Game - Jean Cocteau

50. Hud - George Stevens
51. An American In Paris - Stanley Donen
52. Blow Out - Brian de Palma

Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Actually with I want to live I'm going to guess Martin Ritt.
47 - Renoir (this one is actually on a few of my lists)
48 - Laughton (the best one-film-only director ever)
49 - I'll guess Schrader
50 - Ah, now this one I don't really know
51 - Donen?
52 - De Palma
53 - No idea
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I concur with the Laughton remark. 49. I Want To Live is a Susan Heyward movie so if you're thinking Paul Schrader I don't believe so. I had no idea on that or Dorian Gray.
OK guys. Oliver is the 1968 version. Hud is Paul Newman 63', An American In Paris is 1951. Most others are correct you guessed.
Whoops on the I Want to Live guess. I'm thinking of a right-to-die film in the 70s or 80s, and I'm not even sure of the title or the director! My goof!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
54 - Wilder
55 - Wellman
56 - LeRoy
57 - Todd
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
57 - Oops. His last name is Browning

Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
55. Is William Wyler and 57 is Todd Browning
Hey, 47 is mine, bub!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
47 goes to lbangs. i guessed Jean Cocteau.
on 54. Lost Weekend - which one are you referring to?
57. Freaks - Tod Browning
Martin Ritt is the right answer for Hud. based on an early Larry mMcMurtry novel
Good job! I've seen the film, but I had no idea...
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
The Lost Weekend with Ray Milland.
Herewego.
58 - Wiene (have the DVD at home)
59 - Fellini
62 - Bogdanovich
I should know Gaslight, but it eludes me right now.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
good job lbangs.
You meant 63 Bogdanovich, right because I'm gonna give it to you.
Oops. Yeah, that's certainly what I meant. Bogdanovich did not direct johns, though I'm at a loss as to who did!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I've got to get some work done!
65 - Schlesinger (I almost used this one on my own list...)
66 - Traufaut
68 - Altman
I used to know 67 at one point of time. Hmm....
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I looked up 67. Man, I REALLY should remembered that...
Gee.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
You are right on your guesses. Valmont man come on think.
Well, no use now. I looked it up, so I can't really guess at it anymore. I just can't believe I couldn't recall this one.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs

71 - Mike Nichols
72 - Bergman
73 - Powell

67. Valmont - Stephen Frears
74. Miller's Crossing - Joel Coen

81. Un Chien Andalou - Luis Bunuel
76. Le Samourai - Jean-Pierre Melville
62. Gaslight - Michael Curtiz
Number 76 and 81 are right.
Check that 76 and 77 are right.
80: Erich Von Stroheim
Thats right sebreg. good one homes.
78 - Bresson
79 - Pabst (sic)
81 - Dreyer
82 - Renoir again (and, again, also on several of my lists...)
83 - Altman, again
Did I ever mention that I love silent films?
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
ok bangsy, its time to get real nasty.
I'm not sure on all of these...
84 - Lubitsch (who else could have directed this?)

94. Breakfast at Tiffany's - Stanley Donen
95. Blowup - Michaelangelo Antonioni
You get Carnal Knowledge dgeiser1 but bangsy beat you to the other ones.
And I think Floating Weeds might be Robert Bresson.
If Floating Weeds ain't Kurasawa, I'm guessing Ozu. I am pretty sure it is Japaneses.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
A few I know, a few I'm guessing at...
96 - Another Antonioni
97 - Felini
98 - Wermiller (or however you spell it)
99 - I can't remember yet, and I know I should...
100 - Ya just keep trying to slip a Griffith by me, don't ya?
Right on all accounts lbangs. I guess I'll try one more round of toughies on ya. I will have to go to research on that.
Which version of Oliver Oliver! 1968 is Carol Read, the other 's were called Oliver Twist - unless there's a film just called Oliver
Hmmm, much harder this time (at least for me!).
105 - Both De Mille and Cukor have a film named this, though I'm betting you're thinking of the over-rated Cukor film.
Hmmph, that's all for now. I'm stumped!
Shalom, y'all!
