This list is limited to movies the author has seen and in which the world comes to an end during the course of the story.

1. The first movie, I think, in which the world is ended by natural causes.

2. An unforgettable 'dreadful warning' movie.

3. The end of the world on a small budget. Most of the action takes place in a newspaper office. Surprisingly effective.

4. One of the two or three best black comedies ever made.

5. One of my favourite guilty pleasures. I love this movie. And before you say it doesn't qualify,
we do see the end of the world - in flashback.
"Nope, they don't make movies like that any more."

6. The version made in the fifties is probably superior, but this version doesn't wuss out: the aliens win, we lose.

7. Coming soon to a missile silo near you. Kansas isn't in Kansas any more, Toto.

8. This is a real 'sleeper'. Okay, the first 20 minutes or so is less than thrilling as a fairly conventional boy-meets-girl love story develops; but then... Get this video, it's a minor classic.

9. Again with SAC and the Whitehouse and the Kremlin and the bombers and the missiles and this dawn's early light is brighter than a thousand suns.

How 'bout THE QUIET EARTH? A good renter, it's set in New Zealand, I think. One man left on earth type of thing.

Another good brinksmanship movie is an HBO film of the 80's called BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT. Has James Earl Jones in it, too.

Seen and enjoyed both these. In fact I rented BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT three times. Strong cast, good to excellent acting, good screenplay - though you could argue over details. Thanks for reminding me.

Is #8 the movie that has the wrong number call from the missile silo? If so Thank You! I've been trying to remember the name...I remember it had "Mile" in the title. If it is what I think it is I agree with you, a wonderful premise and minor classic.

That's the one. And here's an agreeable review.

Good review! I've never seen this. Hope I can find it at the video store.

I don't know if you saw the movie, "Night of the Comet." It has a post-apocalyptic theme where the movie begins the night before, and the next day almost everybody except a few people have vaporized into dust. Despite the heavy summary, the movie is relatively light since 2 of the main characters are valley girls trying to cope with their current situation.

I do believe I've heard of this one, but haven't got around to seeing it yet. Before I became a Listologist I would choose my rental videos on impulse, mainly, and this one must have one of those labels that doesn't attract my attention, because I'm sure I would have picked it up if I'd noticed the title. Anyway, I'll put it on my 'to see' list - sounds like fun.
