[CUT OFF] The growing popularity of classic trance... backround music?

Tags:
  • Okay so it seems recently all I've been doing is killing all of my lists. But I lost most of my will to add to this when I found Ishkur's unbelievable samples list that would kick any other wannabe samples list out of the water. And his doesn't even revolve strictly around trance.
  • I'd steal everything from it, but I'm not going to. Just click the link if you're interested.
  • So I've noticed that in the past few years, quite a few trance songs have blossomed... that haven't completely originated their own music style... but have rather taken in from previous trance songs and added their own elements... such as vocals, and presume the song now to be... their own???
  • Whatever floats your boat...
  • Random list... no particular order (well, I guess I alphabetized them)... I just took an interest in how many songs I could find relating to this...
  • Angel City's "Do You Know"
  • -taken from Robert Mile's "Children"
  • Ferry Corsten's "Cubikated"
  • -taken from 808 State's "Cubik." Shocker, eh?
  • Fragma's "Man in the Moon"
  • -taken from Energy 52's "Cafe Del Mar"
  • Kontakt's "Show Me A Sign"
  • -taken from Binary Finary's "1998," "1999," take your pick.
  • Lost Tribe's "Gamemaster"
  • -basic layout sampled from Quench's "Dreams"
  • Safri Duo's "Played Alive"
  • -taken from Cosmic Baby's "Liebe."
  • Scooter's "Weekend" (what an earsplitting song.)
  • -parts taken from Push's "Strange World"
  • Stunt's "Raindrops"
  • -taken from Sash!'s "Encore Un Fois"
  • This is an ongoing list... I'll be sure to keep adding to it, because I'm sure they'll keep covering classic, progressive, dream, and ibiza songs and convert them to pure epic madness.
  • Other suggestions are adored strongly.
  • Post.Script. Please keep in mind highlights are updates, not meant to be exaggerations on opinion.

stupid scooter.

What you're referring to is a dreadful trick called "sampling". A few more samples:

Song: "Gamemaster"- Lost Tribe
Blatatly ripped the sample from: "Dreams"- Quench

Song: "Pathfinder"- Positron
Sounds almost exactly like: "1998"- Binary Finary

There's a few more I can't think of right now. Good list, bro.

Good suggestions, Lassic.

I'll add Lost Tribe's "Gamemaster."

It's quite different than "Dreams" when at first listen, but when it comes right down to it, it seems to have layered on multiple different melodies and harmonies on top of the basic "Dreams" layout. Although not nearly as obvious as the others.

But... I don't see how you get Binary Finary's "1998" from Positron's "Pathfinder"... they sound like two completely different trance songs... much of the same trance style, definitely forming the same trance anthem sub-genre... but not of the same melodic patterns... maybe you have them down more than me though... I'll listen to them a bit more...

Oh, dude, that's my bad, I should have said.

"1998" (Gouryella Remix)

Get that one. That's the one it sounds like.

Also, it's often referred to as "Beachball 2004". So I really don't think it should be included.
(Referring to the Cruising/Beachball mystery.)

Here's another one

Song: "Pissed Off"- Richard Grey
Sounds a lot like: "Rollin & Scratchin"- Daft Punk

Ewwwww.... "Beachball 2004" are you serious?

Well that explains everything perfectly, because the cd I got the song off of was "Trance Party Volume Four" from Robbins Entertainment... and that Record Label is, in my opinion, the #1 trance blasphemizer. Their website is even douche-worthy. Obviously they wouldn't label the song "Beachball 2004" because they probably lacked the knowledge of. In fact- their compilations also supplied me with Kontakt's "Show Me a Sign." They're like the #1 "Trance-Pop Wannabe" and "Trance Knock-off" record label.

Anyway I could go on forever ranting about the stupidity of the creation of Robbins (not even starting in on how horrid the mixing skills are of the Happy Boys), but alas, this list has nothing to do with it... so why pollute it any longer...

I'll check out those songs.

I can't find Richard Grey's "Pissed Off" anywhere online... not even a sample...

I'll just take your word for it... which is incredibly stupid on my part... but I will...

No, it's not sampled, I'm not even sure it should be on this list. I'm just saying they sound VERY similar. Think the next level of that Gouryella/Out Of The Blue thing.

And his name might be Gray. I really haven't checked recently.

Lassic, I really wanna thank you for all of your suggestion- no sarcasm, I'm serious. :)

Heh. No problem, dude. They may not all be entirely accurate, but...eh. Tis the trouble with music lists. Ya never know exactly what to look for.

I think it's very unprofessional doing this where they just rip off another's work, they don't even refer to the song that it's being stolen from, and for instance, your average trance listener is much more likely to have heard gamemaster than dreams.
That said, i think gamemaster is still quite original - good list btw :) .

this list could become huge, because today everyone is copying each other, but here are some well known examples:
push - universal nation (cygnus x - the orange theme)
kaycee - escape (4voice - eternal spirit)
ferry corsten - cubikated (808 state - cubik)
tiesto - suburban train (kid vicious - re-form)
pulsedriver - your spirit is shining (the space brothers - shine)
ayla - liebe, safri duo - played alive (cosmic baby - liebe (red))
..................................and many, many more

Although most of those examples I can't speak out on, there's one I can.

Universal Nation- The Orange Theme

Although they sound similar, there is absolutely no sampling going on here.

Christ. Sometimes I can't stand Ferry Corsten. "Cubikated" makes me sick. Puts him on the same level as 4 Clubbers and Groove(a)holics for putting "Children" under their name.

I haven't decided if I want to add Ayla's "Liebe" to the list... because it took on the same title... putting on a whole new approach- that Ayla redid the song altogether, without attempting to remake it into another song.

That could just sound like jiberish...

What I'm really debating is... if I add Ayla to the list... then I might as well add 4 Clubbers and Groove(a)holics for their versions of "Children."

I say don't add it. I know what you're talking about and that's the situation that was going on with Pissed Off/Rollin and Scratchin.

Perhaps it's just me but I swear that Spooky- Little Bullet (Live Version) has its melody at the end sampled in Sasha- Xpander. Maybe they just sound very similar. If there is sampling going on it is very much in the way Gamemaster did, producing a reasonably different song to the original. In this case it would be even more different to the original. Like Gamemaster I believe the sampler is better than the sampled however.

Hm...well, check out Lolo's "Why?" and get back o me on this whole Xpander situatiuon.

Don't question me. Just do it. Do it NOW!

That's kinda similar but not as similar as Little Bullet (Live Version) and even that is just very similar as sljiva says.

Well, Little Bullet was made by Charlie May, who also co-produced Xpander. So it's not that strange that these two sound very similar.

Yeah i noticed the presense of Charlie May in the production of Xpander so that made me even more certain that there was some amount of sampling

No, there wasn't any sampling involved. He (Charlie) just used his trademark sound, and that's why Xpander turned out so good.
Two songs by the same producer that sound similar isn't anything new or unusual, nor does it imply that sampling is involved. Check out above mentioned Ferry Corsten and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The part 4 minutes into Transa - Enervate (original mix) sounds SO much like the beginning of AvB - Blue Fear.

Well... I went beyond and listened to the entire song... back and front... I'm not hearing the same things as you... perhaps you could explain it even further...

I'm just rejoicing right now because I actually already had the two tracks you brought up. I'm still in search for alot of the other tracks...

Oh, wait I know what happened. The songs are in the same compilation so the "beginning" of Blue Fear I was talking about is actually the end of Enervate(a different mix). Lol, my bad.

.....Wow. That's funny XD.

Lol yeah cos its Northern Exposure series and Sasha and Digweed mix songs so you have parts of different songs playing at the same time for often around a couple of minutes and until you hear the originals it's actually sometimes hard to tell what is one song and what is another.

oops that was meant to be a reply to argy bargy

Cygnus X - Positron 2002
from Cygnus X - Positron.

It's a re-release of the exact same track by whoever that vocalist is with stupid insipid lyrics on top.

I would add those two tracks, but it opens a whole new field to which I'd add other re-releases. I've tried doing this before, but it just didn't suite the same point of the list.

Other songs I would have put on here.

- Brainbug's "Nightmare 2005" (from "Nightmare")

- Nalin & Kane's "Cruising (Beachball 2004)" (from "Beachball" (Durr...))

- On that note, I might as well put Binary Finary into the list.

Sampling can be ok in small doses, or if done properly, i mean seriously everything these artists do involve some kind of sampling; and these are some really good artists

The Orb
The KLF
DJ Shadow

Hey Guys

Interesting topic. In most cases here, I either haven't heard the original tune, or the sampled version. Except for Scooter: What bastards. I do have a recomendation of two songs which sound very similar. "Blank & Jones - Mind of the Wonderful" & "Andain - Beautiful Things(Photon Project Remix)." They are different to a degree, but there one must have influenced the other. They came out roughly same year, which asks the question of who copied who?

I've listened to Played Alive a LOT, and also to Cosmic Baby's Liebe. I couldn't hear a link. Are you sure Played Alive has sampled Liebe?

well, in fact they have, both songs are good, in my opinion, you just have to listen very carefully to the breakdown part of Played-a-live and then you possibly hear the link.
