Not what they've recorded, how popular they are, what ground they broke, how influential they are, or anything else: these are the guitar virutosos I estimate to be the most capable guys out there on the guitar.
I don't actually have too much taste for Yngwie Malmsteen's music, but he can play anything another guitar virtuoso comes up with, and usually better. He can waste anybody at speed, improv soloing, and even classical guitar. He is getting older, though, so his skills may fade in the next decade.
John McLaughlin and Jimmy Page would be guys I would vote on, but lots of people would disagree with me on Page. My personal opinion though, take it or leave it.
They are excellent guitarists, and certainly good composers of guitar music, but both would be shredded to death by the guys I've mentioned in a test of technical and improvisational skills (the main criteria for this particular list, especially favoring the former).
