The 'rules':
1. The year during which the story of a film plays should NOT be the year in which the movie was made, or came out.
Example: If film X was made in 1973, it will only be on this list, if the story does NOT play in 1973.
2. The year has to be exact. Therefore time indications like in the 50s or around 1945 are not valuable.
3. If the plot of a film plays during more than just one year, we'll take the year during which the major part of the story is set.
Example: Rosemary's Baby plays during two years: 1965 and 1966. But as the major part of the movie plays in 1965, I have taken this year.
AIM: find for every year of the 20th century one film!!!!

The Godfather takes place mainly in 1945.
Back to the Future takes place somewhat in 1985 but mainly in 1955.
Another candidate for 1968 (with more votes) would be Apocalypse Now.

Pretty much any Scorsese movie has years that are easily identifiable, but likewise, they also take place over many years. I'm not sure which year you want to use.

For Scorsese: thx once more, I think The Aviator, Raging Bull and Goodfellas would be the most interesting once.
They would be interesting, but as I said, it's impossible to decide which year to use. Raging Bull has a brief sequence from 1964, then we flash back to some events from 1941, then two fights from 1943, then more fights from 1944-1947, more events from 1947, then to 1949, then 1950, then we jump to 1956, then 1957, then 1958. Goodfellas starts in 1970, then flashes back to 1955, then to 1963, then back to 1970, then ends in 1980 (no I didn't remember all this, I used filmsite.org).
Regarding 1984, did you see this version? That one has enough votes. I can't think of a better film for the year.
That's actually the version I was thinking about. The problem is that the story plays during 1984, and the film was made in 1984.

I tried doing IMDB searches for some of the tough earlier years and didn't have much luck. Here's what I got:
1901 - The Grey Fox (1982) - only 357 votes, but you might want to relax the vote rule, since this year is tough
1903 - Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
1904 - Peter Pan (1953) - well, it's based on a play that was written in 1904 and (I'm fairly sure) takes place in 1904, but I haven't seen this film in a while, so I can't be certain that the movie itself actually takes place in 1904
1910 - The Aristocats (1970)
1911 - Easter Parade (1948) - only 901 votes
1917 - October (1927) - only 615 votes
1919 - Eight Men Out (1988)
I have eliminated the rule concerning the votes, as I have now seen that even well-known films like Eisenstein's October don't even get 1000 votes.

Hmm... well, now I don't know. I didn't notice that it was under 1952. I just used lukeprog's Google search and found this, which said it's set in 1956. But according to this, the film starts with the title "Korea, 1952." Which doesn't necessarily mean that the majority of the action takes place in 1952... but at the same time, I couldn't find any references to 1956 on the latter site either. So I'm baffled.
OK. Hmm...I think I'll let it under 1956, as long as I haven't found any other sources.
