This is an entry in a continuing series I call Critical Consensus. I am averaging the opinions of several excellent music critics to produce a list of each artist's albums. The albums will each have a rating between 1 and 10. The albums will be listed in a recommended purchasing order, so new fans will have an idea of where the best place to start buying an artist's work is. These are not my opinions, although, since I have chosen the critics used (and I'm using many), my taste will perhaps seep through a bit.

Terribly nerdy, I know, but maybe this will help people only now beginning to dabble into certain artists' bodies of work.

ah c'mon...urban hymns is a perfect album! it even won nme album of the year...or q or spin or somemthing

Shakermaker, may I venture a guess that you are British? I noticed you tend to comment on British bands and albums.

Just curious. I read several British music and film magazines, and in general tend to enjoy them much more than their American counterparts, so I certainly tend to keep an ear to the ground for tremors across the ocean.

I also must add that I would love to see you add some list. You seem to know your musical stuff, and I'd love to see more of your opinion.

Shalom, y'all!

Oddly enough, I recall that it was the British critics (and I remind you that this list is critic-driven and not a reflection of my personal opinion) that drove Storm in Heaven over Urban Hymns. I'm not sure most American critics knew much about Verve before the breakthrough of their last album.

Still, I would be curious to redo this list and see how the two would fall out in 2002. Want to lay any bets? I certainly would not be shocked to see Urban Hymns overtake Storm.

Shalom, y'all!
