Buffy Season 2: My 5 Favorite Episodes

Tags:
  • Surprise (2.13) - Buffy and Angel do the big "It" for the very first time! Everyone knows what happens to Angel afterwards, but at the time of the original airing it was a big cliffhanger. This episode is also memorable for the opening "dream" sequence-- as we see in this as well as future episodes, Buffy's dream sequences are usually very crafty, artful spoilers for future happenings.
Favorite Quote: Buffy (to Willow, concerning Oz): You think he's too old 'cause he's a senior? Please, my boyfriend had a bicentennial.

  • Innocence (2.14) - You can't list 'Surprise' and not list 'Innocence'. Part two, to 'Surprise', where Angel loses his soul and becomes Angelus again. Great episode all around: we see David Boreanaz as Angelus; clad in leather pants, smoking, and kissing Spike (lol). We also experience Willow's pain as she witnesses Xander and Cordelia kissing-- probably the hardest part of this episode for me. That was the diss of all disses, Xander! I hated Xander for weeks after I first saw this episode. Poor Willow. And Buffy uses a rocket launcher in the middle of a crowded shopping mall to destroy a previously undestroyable demon-- great stuff. Classic moment when Angelus and Drusilla both leap to the side as Buffy holds up the launcher.
Favorite Quote: Joyce: So what'd you do for your birthday? Did you have fun? Buffy (looks sad): I got older. Joyce (looks compassionate): You look the same to me.

  • Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered (2.16) - Xander forces witch Amy (soon to be Rat Amy) to do a love spell, so Cordelia will fall madly in love with him. Things go terribly wrong and wackiness ensues. This episode is memorable for naked Buffy attempting to seduce Xander, lol. And also the group of 'passionate' women-- including Buffy's MOM-- who attempt to kill both Xander and Cordelia. The reality-altering episodes are always great, and this one was hilarious!
Favorite Quote: Cordelia(to Xander): The only way you could get girls to want you would be witchcraft. Xander: That is such a...well, yeah, okay, good point.

  • Becoming: Pt. 1& 2 (1.21-1.22) - You really can't separate these two episodes! The last one was more intense, naturally, but the first one had it's moments. The ending of part one was excellent. A suspenseful cliffhanger as Buffy races to the library and finds her friends either dead or missing and then she gets cornered by police officers for the murder. Part two.. simply a classic. A perfect episode with a heart-breaking ending as Buffy becomes a runaway and leaves Sunnydale and slaying behind-- albeit temporarily. This is also the first time we see Spike & Buffy working together... kinda.
Favorite Quotes: Police Officer (into walkie-talkie): All units, we have a fugitive on foot at the high school. Homicide suspect. Female, blond, approximately sixteen years old. Suspect is very dangerous.
(Is that quote NOT the entire essence of this entire series??? Gotta LOVE this writing!!!)

  • Passion (2.17) - Another tear-jerker; this one is narrated by Angelus. this episode is awesome for it's absolutely beautiful treatment of Jenny's ugly death-- what a cruel joke. We KNOW Angelus is evil to the core after this. Seeing Giles go berserk and almost getting killed was very painful. This series handles grief, pain, betrayal, and love in all its forms so passionately (to be corny about it).
Favorite Quote: Angel: It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we can live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank. Without passion, we'd be truly dead.

  • Honorable Mention
  • Phases (2.15)
Author Comments:

These are in no particular order. Those are the episode numbers in parenthesis, NOT numerical ratings. So (2.16) would mean: season 2, episode 16.
