- January 4: The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini (4½*)
- A coming-of-age story of a boy named Amir growing up in Afghanistan, though the coming-of-age thing doesn't really take until childhood is long past in years but ever-present in memory. I found it to be a surprisingly easy read for the weight of some of its subject matter. The simplicity of the storytelling style belies, or perhaps lends to its power. Despite a good chunk of the novel being backdropped by a country and a culture in turmoil, it is a relentlessly personal story about courage and the ties that bind. You will not feel separated for a moment from the world in which Amir lives, and it's a beautiful, fascinating glimpse into that world. My only caveat is that the author tends not to trust the reader to make connections, meanings, symbols, and therefore likes to spell them out, which is unnecessary in any work of literature, in my opinion. Distracting, but not so much that I couldn't enjoy the novel or wouldn't recommend the heck out of it to anyone who will listen. Not a bad way to start off the year.
