My goodness. Were you assigned these books? If so, for the first three, where on earth did you go to grade school?

I actually had this tendancy to pick up what my mother was reading at the time. I also read a lot of cheesy romance novels before I even understood what sex was, but I couldn't remember any of the titles. I was way to young to understand any of them.

The Old Man and the Sea, which I hated, was my mothers favorite book, and she suggested I read it.

Jane Eyre was my own pick, and I loved it, becasue she was an angry little girl, and so was I. I really only understood the beginning, before she grew up

BTW- I just think College is a better place to read Heart of Darkness, I was assigned it in both High School and College.

Wow. Thought I was the only one who read Clan of the Cave Bear in 5th grade. I personally would disagree with the "too young" attribute for that one. I think mom my borrowed it from a neighbor and I ended up reading it before she did.

The Old Man and the Sea was assigned in junior high and I hated it. Not sure that would be different if I'd read it later though.

I also, a few years later, saw the Clan of the Cave Bear Movie, with Daryl Hannah. It not very good, and of course the "flatheads" don't speak, so we see them speaking a sort of lewd and crude sign language with subtitles. In 7th grade a friend of mine and I thought it was the height of humor to try to persuade out band teacher to play that at our end of the year pizza parties, instead of what we usually saw, "Herbie Rides Again."

The Old Man and the Sea prejudiced me against Ernest Hemingway for a long time, although I did read The Sun Also Rises in college and enjoyed it.
