- Here are some of the best songs from some of my favorite artists. They are stnad-out songs that you can mention to anyone on the street and they will recognise. They're the songs that stand out among the rest and make you think or all you can do is listen and adore. If there's any you think I need to fix or add, which I know there is, just tell me and I'll try. So, here goes:
- -Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven~ That's kind of a no-brainer. And as much as I love Zep's other art, everyone knows that Stairway is the standout.
- -Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody~ Another no-brainer. And the same as Led Zep, I love alot of Queen, but everyone and thier dog knows Bohemian Rhapsody so its the obvious choice.
- -Red Hot Chili Peppers: Under the Bridge~ Peppers can do it all, from funk to acoustic stuff, and Under the Bridge is a wonderful song to show that. It's bitterly sweet powerful, and stands out among thier other greatness. I love the end of the song, after the powerful chords when the backup singers come in with the, "Under the Bridge downtown...." Its like the Angels calling from heaven. I heard the song is about Anthony's drug addictions, which gives it alot of symbolism and meaning which I love.
- -Van Halen: Right Now~ From a band that usually as head-banging riffs and cranking solos, this is a very differant song. Still powerful, but in a sweeter, movie-moment kind of way. I love the howling lyrics and the screaming guitar to accompany it. I don't know how to describe it, just listen. You'll figure it out.
- -Green Day: Good Ridance (Time of Your Life)~ I know everyone's probably sick of this song from how much the radio loves it, but it still stands out among the bands other work. It's thier only acoustic song I can think of off the top of my head, and is very memorable. Simple, yet complex. Its a thinker.
- -Rolling Stones: Beast of Burden~ Now, this was hard. This is my personal choice for them even though I'm sure everyone has a differant one. But it's a very soft, sexy song. In fact, I want this song playing when I lose my virginity. Its a great work.
- -Beatles: Let it Be~ Beatles are one of those groups that it damn near impossible to choose just one stand out song. Depends on what year, your opinions, and they have many of these kind of songs. I've always been fond of Let it Be, and think the world of this song. If I could write like Lennon/McArtney, I would the happiest person on earth. I also thought Don't let me Down, Hey Jude were top contenders among others.
- -Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here~ Just like with the Beatles, I had a hard time with this one too. Floyd had probably the most diverse sound in history of music. But I guess Wish You Were Here is that meaningful, soft sweet song that I'm looking for. My favorite Floyd tune is Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2 though.
- -Ben Folds Five: Brick~ This song could make me cry. Its just so beautiful. No further comments.
- -Black Crowes: She Talks to Angels~ Now, bear in mind I'm not as familiar withs these blokes, and that I'm talking about the acoustic version of this song. I have downloaded it and was blown away. As far I could guess, it seems like a head and shoulders standout favorite, but again, I just recently got into the Black Crowes.
- -Billy Joel: She Always a Woman to Me~ He has a few of these kind of songs, but this is probably the sweetest. Excellant piano and very pretty vocals. Billy's a very talented man. My favorite is by far Only the Good die Young. I was tempted to put that here, but it wasn't exactly what the list is about.
- -Elton John: Candle in the Wind~ Same with Mr. Joel, Elton is a master song writer and has plenty of sweet songs, but This is his best known. In fact, a little too well known because I know I heard it too much right after the Princess died. I love the meaning and metaphors though. Again like Billy, my favorite Elton song is Tiny Dancers by far. He does a good cover of Imagine by John Lennon you should check out. Which brings me to...
- -John Lennon: Imagine~ I'm talking post-Beatles solo career. And I think this requires zero explantion.
- -Don Mclean: American Pie~ Because no one knows any of his other songs and this is one of the greatest songs in history, undisputed. You ask anyone on the street to sing at least the chorus and they can. The symbolism in this song is just astonishing.
- -Cat Stevens: Peace Train~ This was hard, seeing as all his stuff would proabably qualify one way or another. But I like the message to peace train and it stands out with its upbeat tempo, but still retains Cat's usual tone and sweetness.
- -Dave Matthews Band: Ants Marching~ The bigger Dave fans would probably argue with me, but I think this works. Its not his softest or most personal or prettiest, but I think it's his biggest and favorite to perform and is very meaningful and easy to understand. I think it retain some sweetness with the, "All the little ants are marching..." part. I bet you can't name one live show where Dave didn't play this.
- -Eagles: Hotel California~ I am not the biggest Eagles fan by a long shot so this could very well be wrong, and just be my favorite. But its a great tune and has one of my favorite solos in it.
- -Metallica: Nothing Else Matters~ Please don't post any messages telling how bad Metallica is now or how they sold out because I don't care. But its obvious why this is the standout.
- -Lynard Skynard: Freebird~ I don't like Skynard, but this is a no-brainer. I love to shout, "Freebird!" at random concerts just to see how the band will respond.
- -Louis Armstrong: Whata Wonderful World~ Its the only song anyone ever knows by him for a good reason; Its his best.
- -Jimi Hendrix Expirience: The Wind Cries Mary~ This was hard, seeing as JHE has pretty much no sot stuff, but I think this is right. Great tune. Jimi sure could write when he tried.
