the first four albums were very tough for me to rank. all of them are very good as far as songs go. 'justice,' however, is lacking a little in the production area.
i placed garage inc. above load and reload, because of some of the classics covers it contains. ("stone cold crazy", "breadfan", "last caress/green hell").

Good to welcome a fellow "johnny" to the list, mr. lunger. I'm not a metallica expert by any means, but I would like to say that I like your placement of S&M; many people I know act that any combination of symphonies and complex metal bands is a match made in aural heaven--I quite disagree. By the way, didn't you once have a roommate who enjoyed the more country-influenced song on Load?

do i know you? yes, i did have a friend who enjoyed the metallicountry song "mama said." not a bad one, but just not as "great" as others. anyways, the symphony thing seems like a good idea, but i found that most of the songs sounded forced... like there was a metallica song with some horns and strings superimposed on it. the two new songs, however, (-human & no leaf clover) i think are pretty good. they almost sound like they were written with the orchestra in mind.
When I saw the title of this list, my first thought was "Master of Puppets better be number one!" Number Two isn't bad, however; Black was a fine album.
I agree with the comments on S&M. Upon my first listening, I felt like I had two radio stations coming in simultaneously. The strings in most songs sounded like they were written with no concept of melody in mind.
I disagree with the comments about the production value of And Justice for All. That album had a very distictive sound that completely changed the way Rock/Metal drummers wanted their drums to sound. I don't think music stores could keep square, wooden bass drum beaters in stock at the time, as they were the key to the Lars sound on Justice.
Metallica, the kings of the E chord. Not only do I think there talentless bums, but they also destroyed napster. My opinion of Metallica has no reflection on you jlunger. It's just an opinion about the band...who I hate.
thank you for not hating me. (don't hate me cuz i'm beautiful.) while i dont agree that metallica are talentless, i do sypathize. this last decade has not been their best. reload is probably their worst studio album to date, and the fact that they followed that up with a live album and a cover album only complicate my disappointment. i dont really have any opinion regarding the napster controversy (i can see both sides of the issue), but metalica's choosing to lead the anti-napster army wasn't the greatest public relations move.
I'm not the biggest fan of Metallica, and I dislike their stance on Napster (or at least their WAY of reacting), but to say they're "talentless bums" is hard to justify. Each member is a pretty incredible musician, jblack, something that I thought you would recognize, whether or not you liked their music or their politics...
Johnny Waco
Each member of the band is talented in playing an E chord in 64th notes. I just think their music is horrible. If there is not a good melody to recognize.
I think you're making generalizations about metallica's music that are a little too broad. There are some songs that are very speed metal influenced (damage, inc., dyer's eve, battery, struggle); however, there are others that ARE melodic (nothing else matters, fade to black, orion, to live is to die). Furthermore, in the beginning i'm not so sure that metallica (or thrash in general) was really as concerned with writing catchy melodies as they were reacting against the new glam metal bands. don't let metallica's seemingly foolish politics keep you from enjoying their music.
By the way, what do you think are the elements of a great rock band or rock song? If I understood your answers to these questions, I might better understand your reaction to metallica.

Well, one criteria that needs to be met, is that all songs don't need to be made in the key of E. Each song you listed above as being melodic is primarily in the key of E. There are twelve different musical keys a song can be written in. Metallica uses 8% of that. Hey, don't get me wrong, to each his own ya' know? Back to your question, what makes a good song or band.
A Change with continuaty. A song must have good changes from verse to chorus without breaking the continuity of the melody. Bridges need to be complimentary as well.
B Lyrically, the song doesn't have to be Walt Whitman, but it has to have a theme, regardless of the nature of the lyrics. For bands, songs that have diverse messages is a plus. No need to write all your songs about the same general topic.
C Hooks..something to make the song memorable. Catchy melodies.
These three things Metallica does not posses.
Well, I understand what you are saying, I'm afraid that I just don't agree entirely. But, as you said, "to each his own." Thanks for posting comments.
in my list of favorite metallica albums and justice for all would be #1 but its good to see its at least at #4 anyways if you want to know the reason why I like it is mainly because of the songs one , dyers eve, and blackened btw idk if I spelled much of that properly but wth idc.
