Keep in mind, these are all newer bands.

I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
The Vines??? There is no way The White Stripes should be associated in any way with this band!!! Their artistical level is very low if any, purely comercial staff here from start to end... Though, I am not sure about the others on the list as well!
The Vines are one of the bands critics like to hail as having saved rock and roll. The others are the White Stripes and the Strokes, and all three bands are worthy of that title, though I will admit, the Vines slightly less so. The Vines are not a pop band, they are in fact a really cool garage rock band with similar musical roots to the White Stripes, only not as blues-based... as for saying that they are purely commercial, well have you actually listened to Highly Evolved? I mean, yes they are more pop-based than most of the other bands that critics like to associate them with, but Highly Evolved is a great album, melding pop, psychedelia and grunge into a really cool sound. (But as I champion them, I will say that Winning Days is an uneven record, that alternates between genius and mediocrity, and sometimes garbage). Maybe you should give the band another listen... In the meantime, I stand by my list.
The Vines... Obsession with the idioms of Curt Cobain, the songs that clearly demonstrates that there is nothing for the guys to say, the compositions build up by two or three premade templates, and calculation is the most characteristic parameters of this band... The first single "Ride" from the album "Winning Days" is, in my opinion, a blockish example of rock popfest with a traditional refrain and sensless content. I see this album as the second edition of "Highly Evolved" that's made up in "the best traditions of the band" as well. If someone tells that they have "saved rock and roll" I can only respond - then don't dig that fucking offal out of its grave!
Hey, where's The Strokes? They're all retro and funky and what aboot the old stuff, 13th Floor Elevators, Flamin' Groovies and the such? Just wondering, any opinions or sharp barbs you can hurl my way would be appreciated.

I thought about the Strokes, cuz I do love them... but their sound is pretty far off from what the White Stripes are doing... and if I'm getting hassled over adding the Vines, I thought the Strokes would really bring out the opinionated. I'll have to reconsider adding them though now that you've mentioned it. As far as 13 Floor Elevators go, i'm trying to stick to newer bands because there is a billion older bands I could list. And then where would it end!!! :)
That is true, every band on Nuggets, The Blue Magoos, Spencer Davis and on and on. I get your point.

I think a companion list to this with The Strokes featured instead of The White Stripes would be interesting. I think Franz Ferdinand would be my first nominee for that one.
good idea!
Shouldn't this include Black Sabbath and especially Led Zeppelin?
